Maintenance Mechanic I

The Maintenance Mechanic I performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to the operation and maintenance of Ada County facilities and grounds. The Maintenance Mechanic I performs varied moderately complex work under general supervision according to pre-defined guidelines. Essential functions include performing visual examinations and operational tests to determine the need for routine repair of building roofs, plumbing fixtures, concrete fixtures, mechanical and electrical systems, and HVAC systems; performing scheduled and routine maintenance on mechanical, electrical and heating systems; installing, servicing and repairing ventilation units, electrical appliances, and other related equipment; installing plumbing fixtures such as lavatory facilities, drinking fountains and sprinkling systems; repairing plumbing systems by clearing stoppages, replacing sections of broken pipe and repair of leaky drains etc.; painting walls and other surfaces by using standard coating methods such as brushing, rolling, and spraying; performing a variety of carpentry tasks such as building forms constructing or repairing dry walls, sheathing, etc.; mixing, pouring, spreading and leveling concrete on surfaces and structures such as sidewalks, steps, walls, curbs, ramps, etc.; fixing, replacing and refinishing floors and doors and replacing locks; cleaning, maintaining and repairing boilers and replacing parts as needed; performing roof maintenance; repairing and relocating cabinets, desks, tables and other office furniture; repairing window frames and screens; and laying floor tile and carpeting. Additional functions include welding metal for fabrication or repair of heavy equipment parts; removing snow; occasionally operating equipment or working as a laborer; performing related functions as required. Work environment and physical demands include making inspections/repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms and where parts worked on may be in hard to reach places; standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions; frequently carrying tools and equipment and may be required to lift up to 50lbs.; work performed inside and outside and is sometimes dirty, dusty and greasy; work performed may be in and around a jail facility and involves an element of personal danger; and may be exposed to the possibility of electrical shock, burns, cuts or bruises.
