Overview
We are the Metropolitan Council, the regional government for the seven-county Twin Cities metropolitan area. We plan 30 years ahead for the future of the metropolitan area and provide regional transportation, wastewater, and housing services. Metro Transit is one of the countrys largest transit systems, employing more than 3,000 people and providing numerous rides through an integrated network of buses, light rail and commuter trains. Manage and coordinate transit service to ensure scheduled service is provided. Respond to and resolve issues through the use of organizational resources; address transit service disruptions, emergency management, regional transit security incidents, accidents and medical emergencies. Dispatch Transit Police for bus, light rail and commuter rail events; handle 911 transfer calls from local PSAPs. Work onsite at the Transit Control Center with hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Time-off requests for supervisors go through a bidding process. The posting will create an eight-month eligible list for current and future positions. Monitor and manage on-time service performance using AVL technology; document and resolve issues for operators outside operating standards. Coordinate response to regional transit service disruptions by arranging work fill, authorizing overtime, instructing operators and mechanics, and monitoring vehicle locations. Dispatch and support the Metro Transit Police; coordinate primary agency response with other PSAPs; verify warrants and license status; monitor criminal justice information system alerts. Make mechanical service decisions based on operator reports and coordinate with maintenance. Supervise and direct bus operators via radio and other communication tools; issue performance records, training requests, and work direction. Address general customer service concerns (e.g., lost items, safety issues) and enforce transit policies. Monitor facility and equipment security systems and coordinate appropriate agency responses. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications
Experience combinations in transit, passenger transportation, public safety, emergency call-center, dispatching, or closely related fields may be substitutable with education as follows: High school diploma/GED with seven years of experience, including one year in a management or lead role. Associate's degree with five years of experience, including one year in a management or lead role. Bachelors degree with three years of experience, including one year in a management or lead role. Metropolitan Council Leadership/ Supervisory training substitutions may apply. You must attach certificates as proof of completion. Other qualifications include: Valid drivers license and acceptable driving record. Typing at 25 wpm. Desirable qualifications include: Degree in Business, Management, Operations, Transportation or related field. Typing 40+ wpm. Experience in call center or communication center environments requiring decision making and problem solving. Experience supervising in a union environment and communicating effectively in diverse settings. Strong customer service skills and ability to handle sensitive issues professionally. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (within first six months)
Decision making/critical thinking; timely, sound decisions under risk and ambiguity. Effective customer service and communication skills (oral and written). Basic MS Word, Excel, and Windows skills. Teamwork, leadership, and ability to motivate others toward goals. Multi-tasking and prioritization in a fast-paced environment. Situational awareness in a communications center and ability to stay calm under pressure. Flexibility to changing circumstances and the ability to read and interpret documents and maps.
