Overview
Role Summary/Purpose: We are looking for a AVP Principal Data Engineer to lead the development of a consumer-centric, low-latency analytic environment leveraging data technologies and transforming legacy systems. This role is in a fast-paced, changing environment and will influence high-level decisions across Synchrony. Our Way of Working We offer choice and flexibility. You may work from home, near a hub, or in an office. Occasionally you may be required to commute to the nearest office for in-person activities such as business or team meetings, training, and culture events. Essential Responsibilities: Design, develop and lead data engineering applications in highly agile and fast-moving teams.
Lead a data engineering team and contribute directly when required.
Implement ETL/ELT on a big data platform (Cloudera Hadoop cluster) / Container using Ab Initio, Spark, Hive, Kafka, RDBMS (Oracle, MySQL), NoSQL databases (Cassandra), and public cloud solutions.
Design, development, testing oversight and production implementation.
Experience with batch and real-time data pipelines in a DevOps environment using Ab Initio and Spark.
Work closely with Product Owners, Product Managers, Program Managers, and Scrum Masters in a Scaled Agile framework.
Partner with architects to design data applications with scalability, resiliency and speed.
Lead data engineering team to drive program delivery.
Drive technical development and application standards across the enterprise data lake and data warehouse.
Accomplish results by communicating expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising results; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; developing, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, procedures, and productivity standards.
Collaborate across cross-functional teams to improve and deliver on business objectives and priorities.
Apply technical knowledge, industry experience, expertise, and insights to contribute to the development and execution of Engineering capabilities.
Stay up-to-date on latest trends in data engineering, recommend best practices, and develop innovative frameworks to promote automation.
Mentor and coach the team to promote Synchrony values and culture.
Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements: Bachelor's degree preferred with a concentration in Computer Science, Engineering or related field and 4 to 5 years of work experience with ELT/ETL/Data warehousing in large-scale data environments (e.g., Cloudera) and public cloud (AWS preferred) using Ab Initio, Spark, Hive, Kafka, RDBMS (Oracle, MySQL).
In lieu of a degree, a certification in related field and 8 to 9 years of work experience with above-mentioned exposure to large-scale data environments.
Desired Characteristics: Prior experience as a Data Engineering Technical Lead leading a team in a Scaled Agile framework.
Strong experience and deep understanding of ETL, data warehousing, data lakes (Hadoop & Spark) and analytics concepts.
Experience owning multiple mission-critical applications on data platforms.
Experience with batch and real-time data pipelines in a DevOps environment.
Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment with globally located Agile teams on different shifts.
Ability to develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships at all levels across IT and Business Stakeholders.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to present complex topics, influence, and execute with timely follow-through.
Experience designing ETL pipelines to enable automated data load into AWS S3 and Redshift.
Prior work experience in a Credit Card/Banking/FinTech company.
Experience dealing with sensitive data in a highly regulated environment.
Demonstrated implementation of complex and innovative solutions.
Articles and publications in the field of data engineering.
Nice to have AWS Solution Architect/Data Engineer certification.
Be the captain of the team, lead by example, motivate, and be a team player.
Grade/Level:
11 The salary range for this position is
110,000.00 - 185,000.00
USD Annual and is eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance. Actual compensation offered within the posted salary range will be based upon work experience, skill level or knowledge. Salaries are adjusted according to market in CA, NY Metro and Seattle. Eligibility Requirements: You must be 18 years or older
You must have a high school diploma or equivalent
You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process
You must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.
New hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before they are eligible to post on other roles. Once this new hire time in position requirement is met, the associate will have a minimum 6 months time in position before they can post for future non-exempt roles. Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 18 months time in position before they can post.
