The Cashier operates as the first point of contact for individuals who have business with the City of Grand Island Finance Department. The primary function of this position is to take payments from customers for a variety of City services. Display honest, trustworthy, and ethical behavior when dealing with internal and external customers. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Regular attendance that is punctual and dependable is required. Collect and process payments from customers including utility, special assessments and department specific payments. Work with the general public and respond to requests and inquiries. Balance individual cash drawer daily and prepare money for deposit. Perform related duties as assigned. Knowledge of: Basic mathematical principles used in clerical accounting operations. Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers. Microsoft Office products which include Excel, Word, Outlook, Internet Explorer. Principles and procedures of cashiering. Accurate use of a 10 key calculator. Methods and procedures used in accounts payable and receivable. Principles and practices of financial record keeping. Ability to: Accurately count, record and balance cash transactions and other monies received. Perform computational tasks and other clerical functions with speed and accuracy. Communicate clearly and concisely, orally, in writing and through email communications. Operate various office equipment including a computer. Strong skills needed in using Microsoft Office products Excel and Word. Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Maintain professional composure when confronted by customers. Prepare accurate and concise financial reports. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: One year of general clerical experience including financial record keeping, customer service, or cashiering. Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Additional specialized training in accounting, financial record keeping customer service or cashiering is desirable. License or Certification: None required. Working Hours: Monday - Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Salary: Position will start at the entry level of the City's salary table. Consideration may be given if experience exceeds entry level qualifications. Other: Bilingual in Spanish is preferred but not required. Candidates are subject to a background check.
