General Schedule:

40 hours per week. This is a shift position. Communications Officers work five 8-hour shifts per week and will be assigned to one of three shifts: 7:00am 3:00pm, 3:00pm 11:00pm, or 11:00pm 7:00am. Position Overview

Receive incoming telephone or alarm system calls regarding emergency and non-emergency police and fire service, emergency ambulance service; receive and dispatch incoming calls for the SafeWalk program; requests for services such as motorists assists, motorist unlocks, faculty and staff office unlocks; information and after-hours calls for all departments within the campus. Question callers to determine location and nature of the problem to determine the type of response needed. Dispatch units in accordance with established procedures. Record details of calls, dispatches, and messages. Issue and monitor access to on-campus sidewalk system for vendors, visitors, and UCO faculty/staff needing access to the interior of campus. Enter, update, and retrieve information from telecommunications networks and computerized data systems regarding such things as wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, and stolen vehicles. Use the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Telecommunications System to respond to messages from other law enforcement agencies. Maintain files of information relating to emergency calls such as personnel rosters, and emergency call-out and phone directories. Department Specific Essential Job Functions

This position is deemed mission essential. In case of inclement weather or other emergency situations, the incumbent is expected to report to work as directed. Performs with minimal supervision, and at times with no supervision. Respond to walk-in visitors seeking directions, inquire about parking violation citations, and seek general University information. Manage and maintain Master Records of keys issued to University employees; check in keys when employees terminate; assign keys properly and efficiently processing New Key Request forms. Receive emergency and non-emergency telephone calls, obtain essential information, ascertain the nature of business, and direct to the appropriate authority. Maintain minimal errors when handling emergency requests. Monitor Simplex fire alarm and panic alarms for campus E&G and Auxiliary buildings and the 22nd Century Intrusion alarm system, noting any malfunctions or inappropriate activations. Contact the University Fire Marshal and Risk Management in emergencies. Use the University fire panel system to send prerecorded messages or voice instructions to other buildings. Access the Central Alert system to send emergency messages to the University community. Monitor the video surveillance system and assist staff in locating footage. Monitor weather in coordination with the Director of Emergency Management and other police staff during severe weather. Operate a police radio to establish and maintain contact with mobile units. Provide accurate information to responding public safety providers and coordinate the delivery of emergency services. Communicate with area police and fire units via radio and telephone; monitor multiple frequencies and manage related communications. Operate and maintain digital recording equipment and the university computer mainframe terminal to document information. Use OLETS equipment and standard office software; may use laptops, calculators, copiers, and fax machines. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications/Experience Required

Performs administrative or manual tasks. Requires general education or vocational training and 3+ years relevant experience in chosen field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a valid drivers license, clean driving record, and be able to operate a typical motor vehicle. Qualifications/Experience Preferred

Shall not have been convicted of a serious misdemeanor or felony crime. Must effectively speak English. OLETS certification. Thirty (30) college credits. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

With minimal supervision, independently makes sound and effective decisions leading to correct, valid, and appropriate actions. Within six months, must complete a State of Oklahoma Telecommunications Certification course and recertify every two years; fingerprinting within 30 days of employment and every 5 years thereafter. Attend weather monitoring software training within one year of employment. Expresses ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; speaks calmly under stress; keeps highly accurate records. Operates public safety communication devices efficiently (police radio, recording, and telecommunications equipment). Deals effectively with stressful emergencies; demonstrates good human relations and effective working relationships with the public and agencies. Follows complex instructions; complies with password requirements and maintains password confidentiality; demonstrates sound judgment in complex situations. Physical Demands
