The Director, Controller
is a critical leadership role within the Accounting & Finance Department, combining strategic oversight with operational execution. This position is responsible for managing the accounting operations, helping prepare and ensuring the accuracy of financial statements, implementing controls to mitigate risk, and supporting the VP Controller in financial strategy and reporting. The role demands a balance between strategic leadership and hands-on involvement in managing the day-to-day operations of the accounting department.
Duties & Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Accounting
Within the accounting department, ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and regulatory standards. Direct the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. Supervise and participate in the month-end and year-end closing processes, including journal entry reviews, balance sheet reconciliations, and variance analysis. Support the financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting activities, providing strategic insights and analysis to support business decisions. Coordinate with external auditors for the annual audit. Help lead or support the implementation and optimization of financial systems, data environments, and software to improve efficiency and reporting capabilities. Manage ad hoc financial analyses and projects, as required, to support the Controller, the CFO and other executive management. Assist in the implementation of new accounting standards and systems as needed.
Internal Controls & Compliance
Develop, maintain, and enhance the company's internal control framework to safeguard assets, ensure accuracy of financial records, and maintain compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Drive continuous improvement of accounting processes, policies, and internal controls to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and scalability.
Leadership & Team Development
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing corporate accounting team, fostering professional growth and operational excellence. Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the finance and broader organization.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA required. 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting and finance roles, with at least 3-5 years in a senior leadership position overseeing financial reporting, accounting operations or related functions. Exceptional leadership and team management skills, with a focus on teaming and developing staff. Prior experience in a distribution, manufacturing, logistics, or similar operationally complex industry preferred. Deep technical knowledge of US GAAP and corporate accounting practices and experience with financial audits Big 4 experience preferred. Demonstrated ability to manage corporate accounting in a multi-location, high-volume, inventory-intensive environment. Proven success leading teams through change, driving process improvements, and implementing strong controls in a growth-oriented company. Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the organization. Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment. Adaptable and proactive in identifying and resolving challenges Strategic thinker with a detail-oriented execution mindset. High ethical standards, integrity, and a strong sense of ownership. Ability to operate in a dynamic, fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines. Exceptional organizational and project management skills. Physical Demands & Work Environment
This full-time position requires approximately 40 hours per week and involves regular physical and sensory activity, including:
Bending, lifting, and carrying materials weighing up to 20 lbs.
