Job Title: Senior Data Engineer NC FAST (Contract)

About the Role: The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS-ITD) is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to lead the design, development, and optimization of cloud-based data pipelines and analytics platforms. This role will focus on Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics to support the Child Welfare Program, ensuring secure, scalable, and high-performance data solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Design, develop, and maintain data models in Azure Synapse to support analytics and reporting.
Build and optimize ETL/ELT pipelines using Azure Synapse, Data Factory, and SQL pools.
Integrate data from Salesforce and other sources into Azure Synapse.
Monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain cloud data pipelines and architecture.
Collaborate with analysts and stakeholders to design Power BI dashboards and provide self-service BI enablement.
Support data governance, performance tuning, and query optimization.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
5+ years designing & optimizing scalable data pipelines with Azure Synapse, Snowflake, or Databricks.
7+ years of advanced SQL (query writing, performance tuning).
5+ years of ETL/ELT processes design and implementation.
4+ years of Data Modeling & Warehousing (star & snowflake schema).
3+ years programming with Python or Scala for data processing.
Experience with Azure Data Platform (Data Factory, Data Lake, SQL Database).
Strong understanding of cloud data platforms (Azure/AWS).
Preferred / Desired Skills:
Familiarity with Event Hubs, Azure Stream Analytics, and Azure Functions.
Experience with Power BI visualization and self-service BI enablement.
Hands-on experience with SQL/T-SQL scripting and query optimization.
