- Performs manual and skilled horticulture work - Maintains gardens, grounds and demonstration projects

Examples of Duties: UNDER GENERAL SUPERVISION - Assists with the design, installation, and maintenance of plant collections both indoors and outdoors - Detects and treats plant collections for pests and diseases and then takes appropriate actions - Participates in researching and locating new plant material - Waters and prunes gardens, bushes and shrubs and spreads mulch - Assists the supervisor with troubleshooting problems and with the needs for landscaping - Operates and maintains a variety of equipment and vehicles including mowers, tillers, weed eaters, mini dump trucks, chain saws, chippers, sprayers, hand saws, pruners, tractors and related equipment - Assists in year round grounds maintenance of walkway cleaning and snow removal activities - Plants caliper trees up to five feet tall - Performs related work

Minimum Requirements: - Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work - Lifts and carries items weighing up to 70 pounds - Lifts and carries items weighing over 70 pounds in a team setting - Spends prolonged periods of time sitting, standing, walking, carrying, stooping and climbing - Spends prolonged periods of time exposed to the elements - Works at locations with limited or difficult access including uneven terrain

Minimum Requirements: - High school diploma or the equivalent - One year of growing and cultivating flowers, plants, shrubs or vegetable gardens - Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license

Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted

Special Requirements: Must be licensed as a Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator, Category 3 and 19, by the State of Kentucky or obtain within 3 months of employment (KRS 217B)

KSA's: -Knowledge of a variety of materials including fertilizers or pesticides used in the development of soil and tree or in the general care of plants and trees - Knowledge of equipment used in the development and maintenance of gardens and grounds - Knowledge of plant and tree taxonomy and husbandry - Knowledge of plant diseases and pest problems - Ability to collect and document field dates - Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy - Ability to manage land, and identify and remove invasive plants - Ability to operate mowers, tractors, tillers, chain saws, or related equipment - Ability to patiently handle delicate plants or trees requiring specific care
