Overview

Serve as a member of Brookdale Medical Center’s health team in the care, diagnosis, treatment and administration of patient services in assigned area. Supervision of residency program and students. Clinical responsibilities in both inpatient and new admissions. Responsibilities

Supervise medicine residents in inpatient medical care, including the performance of procedures and communication with specialists. Provide internal medicine care for hospitalized patients, including new admissions. Provide care for patients in the Observation Unit, discharge patients to home or admit as inpatients. Evaluate and provide initial management of inpatients of the Medical Intensive Care (MICU) or Cardiac Care (CCU) services, with back up from critical care and cardiology faculty. Perform and teach central line insertions, paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture, arterial line insertion. Be responsible during the night shift for maintaining the highest safety and quality of medical care provided by house staff. Directly supervise MICU/CCU residents. Evaluate each new admission to the MICU and CCU units. Document evaluation of new admissions in Brookdale’s electronic medical records, EPIC System. Be directly involved when any MICU or CCU patient clinically deteriorates. Consider needs for urgent consultation – particularly for new or deteriorating patients. Advise/supervise MICU/CCU residents accordingly. Speak with family members when possible, particularly if it will improve the quality of care and the visibility of that quality. Occasionally, admit or care for patients without the resident when residents are unable. Sign DNR/DNI forms for newly admitted medicine patients. All other duties as requested. Qualifications

Education: Graduate of a medical school accredited by the Council on Medical Education. (MD or DO). Experience: Experience as a hospitalist preferred. Licenses, Certifications: Licensed by the New York State Department of Education. American Board of Internal Medicine Certification. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. Credentialed to perform the following procedures: Central line insertions Paracentesis Thoracentesis Lumbar Puncture Arterial line insertions Knowledge and Skills: Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position. Physical Requirements: Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day. Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds.
