Maintenance Mechanic Opportunity

Covia is looking for a dynamic Maintenance Mechanic who will have a positive impact on the Operations team at its Tuscaloosa, AL location. The Maintenance Mechanic is accountable to ensure the safe and productive operation of the plant and must possess aptitude for multiple disciplines and be proficient in the operation of equipment associated with all functional areas within the plant. The successful candidate will have the following key areas of responsibility: Safety: Perform each and every job in a safe and timely manner. A pre-job safety discussion is mandated before any major maintenance task is undertaken. Preventative Maintenance: Perform all preventative maintenance as needed in the plant to include familiarization with oils and greases (bearing assemblies, bearings, reducers, motors) replacement and disposal, pipeline inspections, slurry pump inspections, change/repack glands on pumps, plumbing, patching, and v-belt changing. Dredge: Troubleshoot issues on the dredge relating to cutterhead, cutterhead drive, dredge piping, dredge pump, service water, hydraulic winches, hydraulic systems, and other electrical issues. Must have the knowledge and skill to replace all pump related parts and bearing assemblies with minimal supervision and the ability to coach other employees in their maintenance. Drive Mechanisms: Work on and replace sheaves and pulleys, chain and sprockets, reducers, motors, motor bearings, shafts, couplings, etc. Able to align motor shafts, couplings, or shafts. Pumps and Blowers: Ability to replace all wear surfaces in all type high chrome, rubber lined, and urethane lined pumps and fans to include liners, impellers, fans, shaft sleeves, and bearings. Welding: Ability to choose the proper rod and weld in multiple positions on different types of metal and varying thickness. Ability to work from blueprints and fabricate items as needed. Be very adept at using a cutting torch. Includes the use of dial indicators, venires, calipers, micrometers and TPM equipment. Electrical: Check fuses, breakers, and VFDs and roughly diagnose issues. Housekeeping and safety, and other informational meetings, including related activities. Maintaining housekeeping in the shop area to Covia and MSHA standards and enhance our safety program. Understand the plant's basic flow sheet as well as the operation and purpose of each type of equipment. We will train you on how to operate all mobile equipment properly and safely. Selecting the proper lifting equipment and proper rigging hand signals. Familiar with the care and proper safe use, nomenclature and selection of tools and materials used in maintenance. Filing, reaming, tapping, drilling, pipe fitting and fusion pipe welding and other benchwork activities. Work as a fill in production employee when other employees are on vacation or work as necessary to complete production requirements at the supervisors discretion. Perform any other task safely, as directed by supervisor. Able to work overtime. The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required. 5 years of dredge/industrial sand experience desired. Ability to diagnose mechanical or equipment failure to include burnt up motor, blown fuse, seized bearing, excessive wear, or any other mechanical failure. Ability and desire to learn from experts and take that information moving forward and apply it steadily to your work and our operations. Basic electrical knowledge including troubleshooting and identifying electrical issues. Read and understand parts schematic and blueprints for maintenance fabrication and ordering replacement of parts. Basic computer skills - for maintenance portion of our company ERP. Comfortable working in and around water. Must pass a pre-employment weld test - AWS D1.1, 3G uphill, SMAW, 3/8 plate. Inspection will be visual and bend. Commitment to Our Culture
