Overview
Joby Aviation is seeking a highly capable Senior Technical Safety Program Manager to join the Safety Team to contribute to continuous improvement in the safety of our development and production aircraft. This individual will possess a strong understanding of aircraft development, aircraft systems, its safety processes, and Safety Management System (SMS). They will work with the Flight Research team and broader Joby organization on safety aspects of novel aircraft design through its rapid development and flight testing. They must be able to anticipate and assess risks, investigate incidents, determine technical corrective actions, and drive actions with relevant engineers. The position is located in Santa Cruz, California in the Monterey/Santa Cruz region and requires frequent travel to offsite test locations.
Responsibilities
Bring deep aircraft level knowledge and perspective to drive technical safety into the fast-moving development working with the Joby Flight Research organization
Help identify and mitigate risks associated with development and testing, with oversight from the Technical Safety Lead
Evaluate and apply SMS principles in support of Flight Research
Lead Root Cause and Corrective Action investigations to understand and rapidly drive improvements back to aircraft design
Support the emergency response team lead in case of any incident
Enable continuous improvement to operational safety by helping establish repeatable but lightweight process for project execution, with a focus on risk management and mitigation
Supports the broader safety team in company safety programs
Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to support to other company Flight Test programs
Required
8 years of experience in aircraft development environment with proven expertise in technical aspects of air safety
Bachelors degree, with Aircraft Design, Human Factors, and/or Aviation Safety specialty or equivalent experience
Experience working with developmental aircraft, including but not limited to those with electrical, hydrogen, and traditional energy generation systems
Comprehensive data analysis and statistical skills
Knowledgeable in investigative techniques and tools
Experience with safety risk management, assurance, and promotion
Desired
Formal Safety Training (Military, FAA, NTSB, SCSI, Collegiate)
Licensed Pilot
Advanced degree
Aircraft configuration, design, and integration experience
Understanding of safety implications and risks associated with autonomous capabilities
Experience with aircraft level safety assessment process such as SAE ARP 4761
Experience transiting from experimental aircraft to safe operation under civilian or military airworthiness approval
Project management experience
Additional Information Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $126,964 - $169,286/yr. The compensation package offered will be determined by location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
