Overview
Permanent position in UCS's Communications Program. Remote work option. Bargaining Unit Position: Yes. Union of Concerned Scientists provided pay range; base pay range is $84,000.00/yr - $85,000.00/yr. For the specific salary, talk with your recruiter. This is a full-time remote position with benefits. Responsibilities
Serve as the media point person for one or more UCS campaigns, with flexibility to handle media opportunities for other issue areas. Keep abreast of campaign goals, targets, strategies and activities and develop proactive strategies to garner earned media, including creating newsworthy analyses, reactive media strategies, and a regular calendar of activities to obtain ongoing visibility across outlets and podcasts. Develop cross-channel ideas (social media, digital ads, blog posts, etc.) to support earned media and the campaign\'s content drumbeat. Represent UCS campaigns in coalition media efforts and assist with coalition messages/media strategy. Write, edit and distribute press releases, op-eds, factsheets, pitch memos, letters to the editor, backgrounders, and social media posts. Stay informed on messaging research and polling; develop talking points with program staff based on campaign issues. Establish relationships with journalists to garner coverage; pitch stories, respond to interview requests, track outlets and journalists, and staff UCS press briefings and reporter meetings. Enhance media and interview skills of UCS staff through trainings and development of talking points and soundbites. Track UCS press hits and contribute to quarterly media reporting. Perform other duties as assigned. Manage media consultants and interns as needed or for specific projects. Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor\'s degree required; comparable training or experience may be substituted. 3-7 years of experience in media relations or journalism. Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to conceive and execute earned media strategies. Robust technical skills to write press materials, identify opportunities, and develop messages and sound bites. Social media and visual communications skills a plus. Physical Requirements
Must be able to remain in a stationary position for long periods. Operate a computer and use a mouse/keyboard; communicate in verbal and written formats. Work Schedule
Regular office hours that accommodate the East Coast media market; occasional nights, weekends, and on-call on a rotational basis as needed. Travel Requirements
