The Obstetrical Technologist assists in patient care, surgical services, and delivery room services under the supervision of a registered nurse. The responsibilities include carrying out the function of the scrub role during surgical procedures, assisting in deliveries, and maintaining supplies and equipment for obstetrical care. The Obstetrical Technologist acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.
Responsibilities Applies the correct principles of aseptic technique.
Establishes and protects the integrity of the sterile field and back table at all times.
Recognizes breaks in technique and takes corrective action; reports events to RN in room.
Handles and secures instruments, cords, and draping materials using aseptic technique.
Applies disinfection and antisepsis techniques; prepares instrumentation and equipment for decontamination per established protocols.
Performs high level disinfection for vaginal ultrasound probes per hospital standards.
Performs daily quality monitoring of solutions per unit standard; changes solutions as required.
Demonstrates basic operating room technical skills and participates in surgical cases as assigned.
Scrubs for assigned procedures, prioritizes activities, and assembles necessary supplies and equipment.
Assists in opening sterile supplies and applies knowledge of anatomy to set up for procedures.
Cares for and handles instruments/equipment according to OR protocols; maintains sterile field and communicates variations to RN.
Anticipates needs of the surgical team; communicates emergent circumstances to RN; dons PPE per policy.
Disposes of biohazard waste appropriately.
Maintains patient dignity and safety; protects privacy and confidentiality of patient records.
Assists in transferring patients to and from OR/delivery area and transports related items.
Maintains a safe, orderly, and well-equipped environment; monitors supplies and equipment; replenishes as needed.
Exhibits professional interactions with managers, co-workers, physicians, and other obstetrical personnel; participates in meetings and in-services.
Attends OB huddles and reports on unit activities; notifies RN of completed assignments and manages task prioritization.
Performs infant equipment assessments and monitors unit items; assists with deliveries as instructed by obstetrical team.
Transports and processes specimens and delivery-related items as required.
Required Job Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent.
Analytical ability.
Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Ability to interact effectively with others in difficult situations.
Preferred Job Qualifications Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program preferred (except current Obstetrical Surgical Techs as of 9/1/2013).
Physical Demands Ability to walk throughout the Medical Center; stand or walk most of the shift.
Lift or carry objects 35-40 lbs; assist in lifting and positioning patients (some may exceed 300 lbs).
Check documents for errors and use a keyboard to enter data.
Possible exposure to infectious materials and chemical agents; procedures require careful work to avoid injury or illness.
