Overview

The Johns Hopkins Institute for Planetary Health (JHIPH) within the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) seeks a Director of Leadership Giving. The role leads fundraising efforts for JHIPH, focusing on identifying, cultivating and soliciting individual donors, while supporting proposals for foundations and corporate grants. The position is part of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) and involves collaboration with BSPH, the University, and JHIPH leadership. The DLG will direct annual, major, and principal gifts and programs, develop long-term fundraising strategy, and provide strategic guidance to JHIPH leadership. The role requires a highly collaborative, ethical, and results-driven approach in a complex higher education environment.

Key Responsibilities

Develop a fundraising vision and strategy with the JHIPH leadership team and BSPH Senior Development staff to build a diverse portfolio of 50–75 major and principal donors. Build a program capable of raising $500K–$1.5M in years 1–2, with long-term goals of $3M–$5M annually in years 4 and beyond. Oversee individual donor (major gifts and annual giving), foundation and corporate giving to support core operations, Alliance growth, research grants, and student/faculty support. Direct and manage ongoing donor relationships in partnership with JHU central development teams, including donor acknowledgement, stewardship, and impact reporting. Develop relationships with centralized foundation and corporate relations teams to identify grant opportunities and lead proposal submissions. Prepare and manage the development budget and forecast for JHIPH leadership; ensure external communications align with fundraising efforts. Maintain knowledge of JHIPH and PHA programs to represent needs internally and externally. Motivate and train JHIPH leadership and affiliated faculty to navigate the development process, including cultivation and stewardship. Direct and manage mandatory stewardship for donors at $100,000+ in consultation with BSPH Stewardship Office. Attend BSPH development team meetings and participate in development trainings as needed. Ensure gifts to JHIPH and PHA are reported promptly to BSPH development staff and entered into CRM; utilize donor data in University systems. Advisory Board Management

Coordinate Alliance Advisory Board fundraising activities, including annual solicitation plans, leadership briefings, and reporting with JHIPH and PHA staff. Develop a future strategy for an Institute-wide advisory board to support the Alliance and/or the Institute. Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree Five years of professional related experience Additional education may substitute for required experience, per the JHU equivalency formula Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree Ten years of related experience, including at least five years of major gift experience and two years of principal gift experience Experience fundraising internationally Strong written and oral communications; excellent interpersonal skills and ethics Experience in a complex higher education fundraising environment Background or interest in environmental sciences / Earth systems Cultural humility and social justice orientation Proactivity, urgency, curiosity, team orientation, and accountability Ability to collaborate across teams and steward professional relationships Role Details
