Overview The Chief Development Officer will serve as a major and principal gifts officer and unit manager for the University of Maryland, supporting the Robert H. Smith School of Business and University Relations/Development. They will lead a comprehensive fundraising program to support the school's strategic initiatives, identify and engage regional development markets, and coordinate with school and university colleagues to advance philanthropic objectives.

Responsibilities

Cultivate and solicit potential major-gift and principal-level donors.

Identify regional development markets in collaboration with development colleagues and manage development travel schedules.

Lead a comprehensive outreach and fundraising program in consultation with the dean.

Initiate alumni contact with prospective donors, engage the dean, faculty, and administrators as needed, and manage the Smith advancement team.

Coordinate gift stewardship activities with donor relations.

Serve on the Dean’s senior staff and collaborate with faculty and staff to advance fundraising and engagement goals.

Partner with central University Relations teams and Smith School offices to build a major gifts pipeline and cultivate lifelong relationships.

Coordinate strategic development events and work with Prospect Research to develop a qualified donor prospect base.

Act as a liaison between faculty, staff, students, and supporters, and work with the School’s Board of Advisors.

Oversee a team focused on major gifts, corporate and foundation philanthropy, alumni engagement, donor relations, and stewardship.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience:

Ten years of fundraising, including major and principal gifts fundraising; three years of supervising or managing professional staff, including major gifts officers.

Knowledge of management and leadership principles; financial policies and applicable laws and regulations.

Strong oral and written communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Ability to manage multiple projects, conduct research and analysis, and provide insights to stakeholders.

Ability to interpret and apply policies, regulations, and laws; resolve complex financial-related problems.

Additional Details

Physical Demands Work is performed in a traditional office environment; occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Travel up to 30% of the time. Driver’s license and access to a vehicle are required.

Salary & Benefits Salary Range:

$205,062–$245,000
