Overview
Area Chief of Staff – CA. The primary purpose and function is to lead, develop and manage associate veterinarians in their hospitals to ensure Banfield can attract, develop, engage and retain doctors that deliver quality care and meet hospital performance measures. This position drives the culture and delivery of quality care by the veterinary provider team (DVM, CVT, VA) to ensure that every pet receives consistent care aligned with our six domains of quality (safe, effective, patient/client centered, timely, efficient and equitable care). The Area Chief of Staff partners with the Practice Manager (if applicable) to drive the culture and delivery of quality care by the veterinary provider team to ensure that every pet receives consistent care aligned with our six domains of quality.
Responsibilities
Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. Act as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board Permits, as required by federal, state, or local law. Own the controlled substance inventory for relief doctors. Own doctor engagement and retention by assessing risk, implementing a proactive retention strategy, and fostering a culture of community and engagement where doctors feel supported and successful. Oversee the coaching program for newly hired veterinarians to ensure an engaging experience and productive doctors knowledgeable in Banfield quality standards, Optimum Wellness Plans, processes, and workflows. Provide experiential learning to develop clinical, surgical, and dental skills. Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition to recruit talent. Act as a brand ambassador in the local veterinary community and provide an excellent hospital experience to externs, program participants, and veterinary candidates during observations. Work with associate doctors to achieve productivity goals through high-quality medicine, preventive care, great client experience, and teamwork. Deliver veterinary operations KPIs through leadership of the hospital and partnership with practice managers; develop, execute, and revise plans to achieve KPIs and hospital OGSM performance. Develop a veterinary leadership talent bench and have a succession plan for the assigned hospital pod. Ensure compliance with Banfield's clinical essentials, regulations, and standards through quality assessments, medical record reviews, audits, and patient safety event reviews. Ensure local, state and federal regulatory compliance, including controlled substances and radiation safety; address gaps with timely plans. Validate clinical skills of veterinary assistants and technicians; collaborate with the practice manager to address skill gaps. Champion preventive care culture and drive wellness plan growth and retention. Drive access to care and client service to meet or exceed client experience goals; resolve client complaints related to medical standard of care. Manage medical equipment inventory and requests in partnership with the Director of Veterinary Quality. Deliver high-level veterinary care professionally and ethically with an exceptional client experience. Establish trust and compliance with clients through preventive care, diagnostic workups, treatment plans, home care instructions, and follow-up planning. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
DEA and state-controlled substance credentials as required within 3 months of employment where applicable. USDA accreditation within 3 months of employment where applicable. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent; valid veterinary license in good standing or eligibility. 3 years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery. Leadership and management capabilities; ability to multi-task and manage complex hospital operations. Strong communication, problem solving, and financial acumen; ability to drive results and accountability. Ability to travel as needed to assist other hospitals, vendor visits, and education.
Benefits & Compensation
Salary range: $142,175 - $244,481 per year. Pay varies by experience, skill level, education, and location.
