Manager Engineering Operations Your role The Manager Engineering Operations is the technical lead for all data center engineering operations at one or more facilities and is responsible for the direct supervision of facility and data center engineers. They report to the Manager Data Center Operations and oversee the review/approval/implementation of SOPs/MOPs/EOPs for the site and ensure proper implementation and training of these procedures. The role includes oversight of general facility operations and collaboration with site remote hands, security, and janitorial teams. The MEO has experience in data center mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and knowledge of large-scale data centers, including electrical distribution, UPS systems, emergency standby generation, fire alarm/suppression, and monitoring. The MEO coordinates significant planned and emergency maintenance events to ensure reliability of critical loads and works with local site engineers to achieve the highest level of availability. What You’ll Do Develop and maintain understanding of DLR and site-related items including facility layout, MEP systems, equipment nomenclature, drawings, SOOs, SOPs, and EOPs. Ensure adherence to customer SLAs and engineering lease obligations; manage BMS alarms, escalation, data extraction, and trend analysis. Coordinate and execute root cause analysis after events and prepare customer-facing executive summaries. Manage CMMS processes, including creating, editing, implementing, changing, and closing work orders; create/edit/close incident reports for site incidents. Oversee maintenance standards, scheduling, vendor management, and internal labor to support site activities; ensure compliance with Digital Realty’s Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety standards. Execute all aspects of data center engineering operations to achieve 100% uptime and 100% SLA compliance; supervise MEP construction, witness testing, and ensure proper operational documentation. Develop and supervise local engineering teams to adhere to SOPs, SOOs, and maintenance standards; manage change management processes and risk assessments for high-risk procedures. Lead high-risk walk-throughs and provide guidance to staff on facility issues; troubleshoot site mechanical and electrical systems. Manage technical incidents, coordinate resources, communicate with customers, perform root cause analysis, and implement post-event remediation. Review rounds/inspections for operation, identify trends and anomalies; analyze risks and track metrics for senior management oversight. Propose improvements to complex equipment and system SOOs/SOPs/MOPs/EOPs; understand local customer business and data center operations. Identify process improvements yielding operational and financial efficiencies; assist with budgeting, forecasting, and capital requirements as needed by Real Estate Management. Support general facility services, health and safety compliance, and accreditation initiatives (SSAE16, SOC2, ISO 27001, etc.). Maintain and track site spare parts inventory and ensure readiness for maintenance. What You’ll Need 5 years of facility management experience in Data Center operations (or related electrical/mechanical engineering) leading data center operations teams in a large-scale environment. Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering preferred. Experience in construction, commissioning, and operation of mission-critical systems including electrical distribution, UPS, HVAC, chillers, generators, fire safety, and monitoring systems. Strong understanding of infrastructure redundancy configurations and risk (N+1, 2N, ATS/STS, failover). Proficiency in reading MEP drawings; knowledge of structured cabling, networking standards, and hardware installation (preferred). Experience with colocation operations, including cage/rack/cable infrastructure and power monitoring (preferred). Ability to evaluate third-party vendor work for quality, manage vendor scheduling, and improve vendor scope/procedures to Digital Realty’s standards. Strong knowledge of PLC theory, energy efficiency principles, and ability to propose improvements. Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills; ability to respond effectively in writing to sensitive issues and complex inquiries. Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills; advanced MS Word, Excel, Outlook; familiarity with MS Project, Adobe Acrobat, Visio or AutoCAD. Basic understanding of emergency situations and escalation processes; strong CMMS/DCIM/power metering knowledge. Ability to conduct meetings, presentations, and trainings; demonstrated management skills including supervision, coaching, prioritization, and conflict resolution. Demonstrated leadership qualities and experience with budget management and expense analysis.
