Cabot Corporation is seeking a Technical Accounting Director to join the Finance & Controls team at the Boston, MA location. The Technical Accounting Director is a key leadership position within the Corporate Controller’s Group, serving as the company’s principal authority on U.S. GAAP and SEC reporting matters. This role safeguards the integrity of Cabot’s global financial reporting by providing decisive technical accounting direction and governing the company’s accounting policies. As a highly visible leader, you will partner with senior finance and business executives to assess the accounting implications of strategic initiatives and ensure compliance across all global operations. This position directs the technical accounting function and is critical to maintaining the company’s reputation for financial accuracy and transparency. This role directly supervises the Technical Accounting Manager and is responsible for their professional development and the performance of the function. Location and Working Arrangement : This role is based at the Boston, MA location and is eligible to participate in the current Hybrid Working Arrangement program (Monday/Friday remote and Tuesday-Thursday in office). Global Accounting Leadership & Policy Governance:
Serve as the company’s principal authority on U.S. GAAP and SEC reporting regulations. Direct the research and interpretation of new and complex accounting standards, ensuring timely and effective global implementation. Govern and maintain the company’s Global Accounting Policies. Direct the continuous review and update process to ensure policies remain relevant and are effectively implemented across all regions. Strategic Transaction & Business Partnership:
Provide decisive technical accounting direction for all significant corporate transactions, including business combinations, divestitures, debt and equity financing, derivatives, and restructuring initiatives. Partner with the Corporate Controller, external reporting teams, and global finance leaders to provide expert consultation on accounting implications and support alternatives analysis. Direct the resolution of complex, non-routine accounting matters arising from transactions and new activities, ensuring conclusions are well-documented and compliant. Financial Reporting Integrity & Compliance:
Review financial statements and reporting processes to ensure rigorous compliance with global accounting policies, U.S. GAAP, and SEC rules. Prepare and/or review technical accounting memos documenting positions on complex matters and citing guidance. Support preparation and critical review of quarterly (10-Q) and annual (10-K) SEC filings, including the disclosure checklist. Stakeholder Management & Team Leadership:
Direct engagement with external auditors, actuaries, and legal counsel to ensure timely resolution of complex accounting matters. Lead, mentor, and develop the Technical Accounting Manager and foster a high-performance culture. Undertake special projects and support corporate-wide initiatives as a subject-matter expert in accounting and reporting. What You Will Bring To Cabot
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting; CPA designation required. 8+ years of progressive technical accounting experience, with a strong preference for backgrounds in a Big 4 firm and/or a publicly traded multinational corporation. Experience in a manufacturing environment is a plus. Leadership: Proven managerial experience with a track record of developing talent and leading a functional area. Technical Expertise: Expert knowledge of U.S. GAAP and SEC reporting; ability to research, interpret, and document positions clearly. Communication Skills: Excellent ability to articulate complex accounting concepts to executive leadership and non-financial stakeholders. Collaboration: Ability to lead and influence across a matrixed organization and build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
