Outpatient Center in Lincoln Park - Clark Job Description
Shift: 8am - 4:30pm M-F The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is responsible for performing a variety of tasks to ensure appropriate handling and processing of all laboratory specimens. The MLT is responsible for registration functions, accessioning, processing, aliquoting, waived testing, specimen setup and distribution. The MLT serves as a resource to other members of their workgroup through training, troubleshooting and participating in quality improvement planning, development and implementation. Responsibilities
Performs registration functions by verifying test requests, diagnosis codes, insurance, ordering clinicians, releasing orders from the Electronic Medical Record, transcribing orders, contacting ordering providers and/or families to verify information as needed to complete registration or testing. Utilizes the Laboratory information system (LIS) to reconcile electronic and paper orders, verify specimen types and place and receive orders, enter results, locate/track specimens, pull pending logs and credit orders. Properly performs routine laboratory specimen processing functions using instructions in LIS, lab test catalog, reference laboratory websites and research protocols; including but not limited to centrifugation, aliquoting and red cell wash procedures. Ability to resolve problems with the utilization of appropriate resources, to make informed decisions and handle complex inquiries in a courteous and timely manner; to work in a fast-paced, time critical department; notifies provider and/or manager when inconsistencies arise. Demonstrates all duties with a focus on Quality practices including but not limited to: patient identification, organization of working environment, following approved protocols and participating in mandatory education, continuing education, training and competencies. Brings forth opportunities for error reduction and error prevention and participates in developing of plans for quality monitoring and improvement including the review and maintenance of the procedure manual. May perform waived and moderate complexity testing procedures including quality control testing and maintenance of laboratory equipment and/or automated analyzers. Supports new staff members while training. Participates in “train the trainer” and serves as a resource for trainers and trainees for initial and ongoing competencies. Acts as a resource to Medical Lab Assistants and for routine troubleshooting. Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication and uses Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel. Participates in department specific meetings and focus meetings as assigned; may require scheduling outside of normally scheduled hours. Performs job functions while modeling service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others. Associate of Science required. Certified as a Medical Lab Technician, MLT (ASCP or AMT) or equivalent required unless grandfathered into the position prior to June 2011. New graduates will have to obtain MLT certification within 6 months of hire. Minimum of 1-year Clinical laboratory Science Experience preferred. Knowledge of hospital and laboratory computer systems and quality improvement experience preferred. Education

The pay range for this job indicates minimum and maximum targets for the position. Ranges are regularly reviewed to stay aligned with market conditions.
