Hospitalist Physician - Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care (PCICU)
Position in Duke University Health System seeking a Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Hospitalist to provide direct patient care in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. The role supports birth through 21 years of age and reports to a supervisory physician.

Job Summary
This position will provide direct patient care services and perform medical procedures under the supervision of a supervisory physician. Responsibilities include performing physical exams, documenting data, conducting diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribing appropriate interventions and medications, and delivering direct patient care to pediatric patients in the PCICU.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
R o u n d daily with the attending of service and/or fellows to assess, diagnose, plan treatment, set priorities and outcomes, and evaluate effectiveness and cost efficiency of care.
Provide and coordinate clinical care for service-specific patients through established protocols under the PCICU supervising physician on site.
Collaborate with fellows, attendings, APPs, nurses, and patient resource managers to formulate treatment plans and monitor patient progress.
Perform procedures specific to the work environment after demonstrated competency within scope of practice and credentialing protocols.
Assess patients for changes in status, escalate concerns, initiate emergency interventions to stabilize the patient, and provide post-procedural stabilization and management.
Develop patient care pathways, protocols, and guidelines in collaboration with the attending physician and health care team.
Communicate pertinent patient information verbally and in writing to supervising physicians, nursing staff, patient resource managers, home health agencies, and other providers.
Document in electronic medical records all relevant data, including diagnostic test results, patient condition, response to therapies, and communications with the supervising physician.
Prescribe and administer medications and medical devices as appropriate, including controlled substances where permitted.
Conduct daily handoffs to the appropriate attending, APP, or fellow at the end of shifts.
Assess educational needs of patient-care staff and provide one-on-one and formal education as needed.
Educate patients and families using clear, non-technical language; document all education in medical records.
Provide expertise and resource information to other healthcare providers, patients, families, and the community related to pediatric diseases, procedures, interventions, and conditions.
Maintain licensure and board certification requirements.
Job Eligibility Requirements
Education : MD or DO from an accredited medical school; completion of Pediatrics or combined Pediatrics/Internal Medicine Residency.
Licensure : Unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB; DEA license for prescriptive authority.
Certification : ABP board eligible or recent/pending graduates may apply; BLS and PALS mandatory before hire.
Experience
Early-career candidates or those finishing Pediatric or Med-Peds residency are encouraged to apply, with interest in gaining experience in Pediatric Cardiology and/or Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.
Job Hours
Position includes fourteen 12-hour shifts per month, including weekday and weekend shifts, shared equitably among frontline providers.
