Overview
Fairview is seeking a dynamic and experienced Manager of Laboratory Practice at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center-East Bank to lead and elevate operations across several high-impact departments: Molecular Diagnostics; Hematopathology (Flow Cytometry and Special Hematology); Cytogenetics; Immunology/HLA.
Responsibilities
Provide strategic and operational leadership across multiple specialized labs
Lead large-scale projects, including central laboratory planning and move, and LIS evaluation and implementation
Collaborate with clinical and administrative stakeholders to optimize workflows and ensure regulatory compliance
Manage complex billing structure and support financial stewardship
Foster a culture of continuous improvement, mentorship, and scientific excellence
Who You Are
A proven leader with experience in one or more of the following areas: Molecular Diagnostics, Hematopathology, Cytogenetics, or Immunology/HLA
Skilled in project management, with a track record of successful LIS implementations
Knowledgeable in laboratory billing practices and regulatory standards
Passionate about advancing laboratory science and improving patient outcomes
In this role, you will work collaboratively with the Laboratory leadership to achieve the vision for Fairview Laboratory Services. Responsibilities will include overall financial, HR, and quality management of laboratory services, development and growth strategies to develop and market outreach testing, coordination of specialty LIS development, complex billing compliance, and insurance pre-authorization.
Testing in these departments serve the entire Fairview system including unique and diverse patient populations. Our hospital is recognized as a national leader in areas like oncology, solid organ and bone marrow transplantation, and cell therapy, and has been established as a rare disease center of excellence. Our teams perform highly specialized testing for inherited genetic disease, prenatal, bone marrow engraftment, transplant, infectious disease, and oncology. Through our partnerships with clinical teams, genetic counselors, and bioinformaticists at University of Minnesota Health, we have developed and validated testing including comprehensive genomic tumor profiling, next generation sequencing of transplant, genetic, oncology, and PGX samples, and whole genome sequencing for patients with hereditary genetic diagnoses.
Qualifications
Required Education:
Baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college/university in a related laboratory field including the related lab practicum or equivalent routes meeting qualifications as a general supervisor for high complexity testing as specified in CLIA ’88.
Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution (Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided); -OR-
Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with 16 semester hours in biology including one semester in microbiology and 16 semester hours in chemistry including one semester in organic or biochemistry (Transcript must be provided); -OR-
A transcript evaluation verifying equivalency to a U.S. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university (Equivalency verification documentation must be provided); -OR-
Completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course and a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with 16 semester hours in biology including one semester in microbiology and 16 semester hours in chemistry including one semester in organic or biochemistry (Transcript must be provided); -OR-
Master’s degree from an accredited college/university in chemistry, biology, medical laboratory science, or an appropriately related field (Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided).
Experience:
Candidates with baccalaureate or higher degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology must have 1 year of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing; -OR-
Candidates qualifying by baccalaureate degree and semester hours must have 2 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing.
License/Certification/Registration:
Applicant must possess or be eligible to receive appropriate Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification. If not certified at time of hire, must obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
Labs-Acute Care - ASCP, ASCPi or AMT - MLS or MT
Labs-Admin - ASCP - CT, HTL or SCT
Labs-Blood Bank - ASCP or ASCPi - BB or SBB
Laboratory certification in a specialty area will be considered - ASCP - CT or SCT
ASCP or ASCPi - BB, C, CG, HTL, M, MB, SBB, SC, SCYM, SH, SM, SMB, SV or V
AMT - MDT, MLS or MT
ACHI - CHS or CHT
Preferred
Education:
Masters of Business or Healthcare Administration (Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided); -OR-
Master’s degree from an accredited college/university in chemistry, biology, medical laboratory science, or an appropriately related field (Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided).
Experience:
Five years of clinical laboratory experience with at least two years of leadership experience, preferably in a complex laboratory environment with multiple locations, variety of testing complexity, and a moderate to large employee group.
Additional Requirements
Previous management/leadership experience with laboratory experience in one or more of the testing areas
Billing and reimbursement knowledge
Experience with project management
Experience with testing middleware platforms
