We are seeking a highly motivated development engineer to focus on building and maintaining machine learning (ML) software and pipelines that power digital health innovations. The ideal candidate will have strong software engineering fundamentals, hands-on ML experience, and a passion for healthcare impact. Workplace Requirements

On-campus position:

This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in person. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change. Hiring Range

Range:

$72,600 - $92,500 *Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime. This position is funded by a grant, soft, and/or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of funding. Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree 2+ years of related experience

In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted

Skills

Strong programming skills in Python and ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn) Familiarity with version control (Git) and collaborative development Essential Functions

Design, build, and maintain end-to-end ML pipelines for data ingestion, preprocessing, training, validation, and deployment Collaborate with data scientists, clinicians, and engineers to translate research models into scalable production systems Develop APIs, microservices, and cloud-based deployment frameworks to support ML applications Ensure reproducibility, scalability, and compliance with healthcare data standards (HIPAA, FDA guidance) Optimize pipelines for performance, cost, and reliability Contribute to code reviews, documentation, and team best practices Preferences

Master’s in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field Experience with data pipelines (e.g., Airflow, Prefect, Luigi) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure) Understanding of CI/CD workflows, containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) Experience in digital health, medical data, or regulated environments Knowledge of healthcare data formats (HL7, FHIR, DICOM) Background in signal processing, time-series, or imaging data Experience deploying ML in clinical/research settings Why Join Us?
