Bioinformatics Programmer Analyst II
to recommend enhancements or changes to the system configuration to maintain optimum system performance and utility. This position involves analyzing requirements, preparing workflow diagrams, developing custom scripts and applications, testing applications, creating software patches, and performing routine maintenance. Detailed test cases and documentation of all programming and system changes are expected, including flowcharts, layouts, diagrams, charts, code comments, and revision dates. This is the second of three levels in the Programmer Analyst series. It is a career-development position with moderate supervision and some latitude for independent judgment.
Responsibilities
Analyze requirements and arrange project requirements in programming sequence; prepare workflow charts and diagrams using knowledge of computer capabilities, subject matter, programming language, and logic.
Develop custom scripts and applications, test applications, create software patches, and perform routine maintenance.
Create detailed test cases and document all programming and system changes (flowcharts, layouts, diagrams, charts, code comments, revision dates).
Contribute to team objectives and outcomes under moderate supervision, with limited problem-solving responsibility while working under defined guidelines.
Collaborate with internal and external researchers on molecular genetics of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and participate in real-time surveillance for these organisms within the military healthcare system.
Position Context This position supports the Multidrug Resistant Organism Repository & Surveillance Network (MRSN). The Bioinformatics Programmer Analyst II is part of the MRSN Team within the Diagnostics and Countermeasures Branch (DCB), in the Center for Infectious Disease Research (CIDR), at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). The candidate will use bioinformatic and IT database tools to analyze bacterial genomes and metadata for outbreak investigations and epidemiology at local, national, and international levels.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field.
Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent written and oral communication skills to work with a wide variety of program management and IT personnel; ability to adapt in a dynamic environment where priorities change.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Analytical capability of data from major proteogenomic platforms including NextGen sequencing, mass-spectrometry proteomics, and array-based data.
Experience with data analysis software such as R and SAS; familiarity with relational databases such as Oracle or MySQL.
Strong written communication skills for abstracts, manuscripts, and reports.
Understanding of clinico-pathologic data is a plus.
Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.
Physical Capabilities
Lifting: up to 25 lbs.
Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
Work Environment
Office setting.
Compensation
The annual salary range for this position is $64,200-$83,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience and education.
