Overview
ESi’s Civil Structural Practice Group is looking for a civil/structural engineer to manage consulting projects and perform engineering tasks related to construction defects and building damage from natural hazards (e.g., wind, water, and hail). Tasks include consulting and loss investigations, site inspections, engineering analyses, and engineering calculations. Work product includes presenting findings in technical reports, delivering findings via conference calls or presentations, developing exhibits, and providing sworn oral testimony. This position is targeted as a Senior Consultant; however, a candidate with greater experience may be considered for Senior Managing Consultant or higher if an established book of clients exists. Key Responsibilities
Develop local clients and projects in the Civil / Structural Practice areas by working with regional business development support, local office colleagues, and civil/structural engineering colleagues based in other ESi offices. Perform marketing and business development activities to identify potential clients and strategies to build a client base. Represent ESi and its consultants to potential clients at conferences and meetings. Activities may include making presentations and introductions to obtain additional clients and projects and/or expand ESI’s business. Provide engineering consulting services in construction defect cases, property liability and compliance cases, damage assessments, and outlining the scope of repairs. Perform field inspections of a diverse range of structures (residential, commercial, transportation, industrial) to determine causes of reported or suspected damages, prepare condition assessments, and develop alternatives when required. Perform analyses on temporary support systems for repair and construction, as well as analyze and design structures and foundations. Prepare and review technical, project-related reports from others for clients, and confer with project personnel to provide technical advice and resolve problems. Demonstrate strong technical writing and the ability to structure and present findings in technical reports, presentations, and graphical exhibits. Plan, manage, and coordinate own work and project activities with ESi consultants and others to meet project goals within timeframes and budgets; may work independently or with other consultants, technologists, and support staff as required. Collaborate with internal teams to plan and complete project work plans, assign duties, responsibilities, and scope of tasks. Communicate with clients or potential clients to prepare or review project proposals or plans, determining required tasks, schedule, budget, and procedures for achieving project objectives. Provide recommendations to clients and the Civil / Structural Practice Director regarding accepting or declining potential new projects based on professional training and experience; adjust scope as appropriate during execution. Provide testimony in deposition and/or at trial as an expert witness or support another expert in testifying. Adhere to ESi best practices and QA/QC procedures; contribute to QA/QC by reviewing the work of other Civil / Structural Practice colleagues. Pursue ongoing continuing education, including preparing technical presentations, white papers, and peer-reviewed papers relevant to practice areas. Serve as a mentor to junior consultants to facilitate growth and development. Qualifications
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program required Master’s degree or equivalent non-US accomplishments Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations
Professional Engineer license (CE and/or SE and/or GE) preferred EIT plus ability to obtain PE license within the first year may be considered Experience Requirements
10+ years of experience in civil and structural engineering Experience with inspection and engineering of residential, commercial, and industrial facilities Experience with design and construction of agricultural facilities and structures is a plus Structural inspection and condition assessment experience Prior litigation support experience (deposition or trial testimony) and experience preparing reports for dispute resolution is a plus Computer Skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and related modules); computer graphics skills; CAD capability is a plus; ability to perform field work using standard test equipment Physical Demands
