Position Overview
We are seeking an Aviation Practice Leader to join SOM. This full-time position directs and provides leadership for activities across the firmwide Aviation efforts, including marketing/business development, project profitability, client satisfaction and employee growth and development, to drive strategic growth of the firmwide Aviation practice and the firm’s brand value. Position Responsibilities
Lead the annual development of marketing goals for the aviation practice domestically and internationally, in collaboration with transportation practice leaders and offices.
Collaborate with Managing Partners, Principals, Studio Leads, and senior staff to develop and execute a strategic plan for the firmwide Aviation practice aligned with annual firm goals.
Lead marketing and business development efforts; supervise staff supporting this work; coordinate with team members on reporting, lead generation, fee development, and proposals.
Research, identify, and develop new market and business relationships and opportunities.
Learn and apply the portfolio of SOM aviation and transportation projects to bring fresh thinking to future pursuits.
Work with Partners, Principals, Design Leadership, Project Managers, and Finance to oversee Go/No Go processes and financial health of the Aviation Practice.
Consult potential clients on project requirements and opportunities; translate and present results for weekly practice reviews.
Focus on local and global relationship building, recruiting and service integration.
Maintain positive client relationships; attend meetings, review design, and provide leadership to ensure high-quality documentation and client satisfaction.
Evaluate industry insights to drive Aviation business strategies; monitor market trends for opportunities.
Mentor and develop staff capabilities in technical/design skills and management/communication.
Collaborate on project negotiations and contract execution; monitor budgets and profitability targets.
Build long-term client relationships and contribute to firm-wide initiatives.
Represent Aviation activities relative to firmwide goals; promote firm news and value through media in collaboration with the Communications team.
Job Requirements
Applicants should have deep aviation project knowledge and superb communication skills, with the ability to prioritize, anticipate and organize workflow. This role requires coordination with marketing and project design/management teams across SOM offices. Preference will be given to service-oriented individuals with discretion, confidence and poise to promote the company’s principles to high-value clients. Minimum of 20 years of experience in architecture and planning, including business development.
Minimum 15 years of demonstrated leadership experience in the Aviation sector.
Maintains a recognized professional licensure in architecture or engineering.
Demonstrates advanced knowledge of architectural design practice with a commitment to design excellence.
Experience leading teams in architectural and engineering design projects.
Awareness of latest industry initiatives, technologies and processes in the A/E/C community.
Strong communication skills, able to build rapport with employees, clients, consultants and vendors.
Ability to lead presentations and discussions with large groups.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
Regional commercial awareness with independent judgment and initiative.
Well-organized team player who can multi-task, manage workload and meet deadlines.

Compensation for this role is based on experience, qualifications, location, and education and typically ranges from $190,000 to $240,000. Our Culture
