Position Summary
The Release Train Engineer (RTE) is a leader on the Agile Release Train (ART), a team of teams (50-125 people) that plan, commit, develop and deploy software together to deliver significant value to CVS’s end customers. This is an instrumental leadership role in the oversight and execution of CVS initiatives that generates multimillion-dollar business value to the organization and touches millions of consumers every year, partnering closely with leaders from other disciplines (Product, Engineering, QA, Architecture, Design/UX) and across the organization to provide quarterly guidance and day-to-day direction. RTEs are accountable for relentless train improvement and for ensuring transparency about the ART’s delivery, risks and accomplishments. The RTE drives train processes and ensures teams have everything they need to be successful to build the product and help coach the ART in Scrum, Kanban and Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).
Responsibilities
Lead and coach the Agile Release Train (ART) and multiple teams to plan, commit, and deliver software that provides value to end customers.
Drive train processes, remove impediments, and ensure transparency about delivery, risks and accomplishments.
Coach the ART in Scrum, Kanban and SAFe practices; foster a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration across disciplines.
Collaborate with Product, Engineering, QA, Architecture, and Design/UX to provide quarterly guidance and day-to-day direction.
Facilitate large planning and solutioning sessions; synthesize data from multiple sources to inform status and decisions.
Support scalable agile practices, metrics, and reporting; promote servant leadership and effective communication.
Required Qualifications
7+ years working with Lean- Agile methodologies
2+ years’ direct experience as an RTE
Advanced understanding of lean-agile principles/mindset and SAFe principles/core values
Strong technical aptitude and experience leading teams in delivering quality software
Excellent communication (written, oral, presentations), holistic view and systems thinker
Able to lead without “Command and Control” style (servant leadership), empathetic
Proactive, problem-solving approach – offers solutions and can jump in to support the Train as needed
Effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills and collaborative style; ability to influence peers and stakeholders
Demonstrated ability to facilitate large planning and solutioning sessions
Understanding of Agile at scale philosophies & methodologies (Scrum, XP, Kanban, SAFe or other scaling models)
Ability to synthesize data from multiple sources to develop insights on train status
Willing to try new things, measure outcomes, and adapt accordingly
Experience with Agile practices such as burn-down charts, retrospectives, defect management, user stories, ATDD, TDD, BDD, CI/CD, automated testing
Ability to travel for onsite PI Planning when required
Preferred Qualifications
Scrum Master experience with teams on complex large-scale applications
Experience with Agile collaboration tools (CA Rally, Confluence, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Miro, etc.)
Education
Bachelors Degree or related experience required; SAFe Certification of 5.0 or higher
Pay Range
The Typical Pay Range For This Role Is $130,295.00 - $284,280.00
This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above. This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
