Aviation Safety Staff Engineer (Design, Certification, MMEL and Operations) The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization, seeks an experienced Staff Engineer for our Tysons (McLean), Virginia office. The Staff Engineer provides staff coordination and liaison with government, industry, and professional stakeholders on behalf of the Air Safety Organization and other Association committees, MECs, and Officers, as assigned by the department Director or Manager. Their focus is in the policy areas of aircraft design, certification, continuing airworthiness, operations specifications, and aircraft maintenance, including master minimum equipment list (MMEL) policies and procedures. They provide coordination and technical support to the Air Safety Organization, accident and incident investigations, FAA and Transport Canada (TC) pilot certificate enforcement action cases, and other safety investigations in the areas of aircraft design, manufacturing, and maintenance. The Staff Engineer represents the Association and the department, interacting with government and industry safety officials on a routine basis, advocating ALPA priorities from a policy perspective. They analyze internal and external airworthiness and certification related data to identify trends and develop potential safety risk mitigation strategies. They develop written communications to membership, government, and industry groups outlining ALPA positions on operational safety issues. While the position requires engineering expertise, it is a policy position. The staff engineer is often asked to translate engineering information into summaries for department management and leadership. Travel:

Coordinate with government and industry stakeholders, and support ALPA’s Air Safety Organization and committees on policy matters related to aircraft design, certification, MMEL, continuing airworthiness, operations specifications, and maintenance. Support accident/incident investigations, FAA/TC enforcement action cases, and other safety investigations in areas of aircraft design, manufacturing, and maintenance. Translate engineering data into policy-focused summaries for department management and leadership; prepare communications for membership, government, and industry groups outlining ALPA positions. Collaborate with committees and staff to identify trends and develop safety risk mitigation strategies. Engage in multi-disciplinary teamwork to achieve ALPA priorities and communicate complex information clearly. Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering or related field from an accredited college or university. Three (3) years of related experience in the civilian aviation industry; five (5) or more strongly preferred. Experience with U.S. and/or Canadian Aviation Regulations (FARs/CARs), international aviation standards, and aircraft design standards. Familiarization with policy activities such as ARAC, CARAC, ARC processes is strongly preferred. Pilot’s license with an instrument rating or equivalent aviation industry expertise; other aviation experience may substitute for the pilot’s license. Experience in Part 25 airplane design and/or Part 121 operations and continuing airworthiness, plus airplane maintenance. FAA A&P certification and/or equivalent experience with maintenance or large aircraft manufacturing. Experience with NTSB/TSB accident investigation processes. Strong technical writing skills; public speaking is beneficial. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with all levels of contacts. Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplined team; self-starter with professional maturity and sound judgment; proactive in issue identification and resolution. Strong time management skills; ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment and transition between projects. Software proficiency: Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint. Travel

Projected annual salary range: $96,027.00 – $137,179.00 401k with 12% employer contribution plus 2% into a Market-Based Cash Balance Plan after 180 days; Roth option available; four-year vesting.
