Job Description The
Director of Engineering-Steel
is a member of the LPC campus leadership team. This role accelerates process improvements and technical capabilities in the Steel Large Structurals manufacturing operations by identifying and eliminating process variations and driving process and product improvements to reduce scrap and rework across all phases of the operation.
Objective: help LPC operations meet business and financial goals by achieving a higher level of technical excellence. Develop and implement statistical and analytical controls for internal and external consistency to improve first-time process yield and scrap reduction. Performance is measured by contribution to the plant operation’s P&L and by setting new strategies to drive tomorrow’s business.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Identify and address process and product performance issues using data analysis techniques (statistical, mathematical, DOE, Six Sigma, etc.) to uncover variables not maintained in a controlled fashion.
Plan, develop, coordinate, and direct engineering projects or programs inside and outside the company, including concurrent engineering.
Develop and drive quality improvement and cost reduction initiatives/pipelines to meet business metrics.
Work with plant personnel to record, implement and control processes for permanent corrective action.
Collaborate with customers, sales, planning and manufacturing to coordinate on new product introductions and support existing products.
Maintain strong plant personnel contact through frequent manufacturing floor visits and interaction with front-line employees.
Establish expert reputation with plant and customer leadership concerning process and product variability concerns.
Qualifications
A four-year engineering degree is required; a background in Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering or related field is preferred. An advanced degree is also preferable.
A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in a technology-driven manufacturing and design environment (e.g., aerospace, telecommunications, electronics, gas turbines, or automotive).
Proven success in process improvements using mathematical and statistical problem-solving techniques to identify process variations with many independent variables.
A record of increasing levels of responsibility and customer focus.
Assertive, energetic, self-starting, risk-taker who can break through historical barriers with data-driven problem solving.
Strong desire to be an independent change leader with proven results.
