Overview
Senior Surety Underwriter, Small to Mid Commercial – Liberty Mutual Surety. Preferably in our Warrenville, IL office. We will consider candidates in the other locations listed. As a Senior Surety Underwriter you will develop and underwrite profitable surety business, and service independent agents, brokers, and small to mid commercial accounts within an assigned territory. You will build and maintain positive partnerships with our agents, brokers, and accounts as a trusted advisor and underwriting resource. You will perform primary credit underwriting and financial/risk analysis, provide recommendations, and make decisions on new and existing accounts. Underwrite and negotiate accounts to maximize profitability while minimizing risk, including the most complex accounts based on the role level. Evaluate customer financials, technical, organizational, and management capacities, including experience and objectives, and form judgments on character. Manage the profitability and retention of an assigned book of business; develop the portfolio through relationships with new and existing agents and brokers; may assist in developing the marketing plan. Perform analytical evaluations of financial statements (static and trend analyses); determine financial position and monitor risk through quarterly statements and work-in-progress data as appropriate. Stay informed about Liberty Mutual Surety and Global Risk Solutions product lines and identify opportunities with agents and brokers, leveraging domestic and global capabilities. Investigate, analyze, and manage underwriting/accounting/workflow issues within the framework of Surety policies and procedures. Assess changes in business factors such as work program risk, data accuracy, timeliness, and exposure analyses; coordinate issues with Home Office Underwriters and Field Management. Assist in evaluating business continuity arrangements and funding mechanisms to help preclude financial loss for owners or other insurable events. Mentor more junior staff as appropriate; perform special projects and other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or equivalent; 5+ years of experience in surety underwriting preferred (7+ years preferred); strong preference for small to mid commercial surety experience. Solid understanding of financial and accounting principles; ability to evaluate credit history and financial condition. Proven analytical ability to assess and judge surety underwriting risks within scope of responsibility. AFSB certification preferred. Strong ability to communicate complex analyses clearly in writing and/or orally for underwriting or training purposes.
