Overview

18 Reasons is a nonprofit that increases food security through the power of home cooking. Our mission is to empower our community with the confidence and creativity needed to buy, cook, and eat good food every day. We offer food education programs through two channels: at the 18th Street Kitchen in San Francisco, paid classes; and free Community Programs with grocery donations and free cooking and nutrition classes for families on a limited budget throughout the Bay Area. Our vision is to create equity and belonging through the transformative and healing power of home cooking. This position will support our Food as Medicine program. Food as Medicine classes are delivered in partnership with medical providers; students with chronic and diet-related diseases (e.g., diabetes) receive a referral through their medical provider to participate. Classes meet every week on Zoom and include basic nutrition lessons and cooking demonstrations. Students receive ingredients delivered to their door and are encouraged to cook along. Food as Medicine is entering its fourth year and plans to expand to new partnerships, patient groups, and program delivery models.
