The Radiology Technologist Diagnostic is responsible for the administration of ionizing radiation to humans of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research purposes. A radiographer performs radiographic procedures and related techniques, producing images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner. Perform radiographic procedures and related techniques, integrating scientific knowledge, technical skills, patient interaction and compassionate care to produce diagnostic information. Maintain accuracy in radiographic positioning and exposure technique while recognizing patient conditions essential for successful completion of a procedure. Possess, utilize, and maintain knowledge of radiation protection and safety. Serve as the primary liaison between patients, licensed independent practitioners, and other members of the support team. Remain sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of patients through communication, assessment, monitoring, and care skills. Participate in quality improvement processes and continuous assessment of performance; demonstrate critical thinking and ethical judgment; engage in continuing education to enhance patient care and technical competence. Perform radiographic procedures, determine radiographic exposure factors, assist LIP with fluoroscopic and specialized interventional radiographic procedures, and perform non-interpretive fluoroscopic procedures as prescribed by a LIP. Apply ALARA principles to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others; receive, relay, and document imaging orders; corroborate clinical history with the ordered procedure; verify informed consent. Prepare patients for procedures; identify, prepare, and/or administer medications generally associated with diagnostic imaging procedures as prescribed by a LIP; start and maintain IV access per procedural protocol. Evaluate images for technical quality; identify and escalate emergency situations and manage until the appropriate LIP or emergency response arrives; provide patient education related to imaging procedures. Educate, mentor, and provide general oversight of students and other learners in the Radiology environment; participate in ongoing quality assurance activities. Registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT-R) Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment
Current Certification by ARRT Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) Experience
Required: One year of previous work experience Preferred: Previous work experience in an academic medical center environment; 1-3 years of radiologic technologist work experience Education/Training
Required: Graduation from a JRC Accredited Program in Radiologic Technology recognized by the ARRT Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Radiologic Technology or a closely related field from an accredited program Independent action
Radiographers independently perform or assist the licensed independent practitioner in the completion of radiologic imaging exams. Radiographers independently complete imaging exams based on physicians’ written orders, department protocols, and institutional safety standards. Radiographers represent the goals, values, and vision of VCU Health System. Ensure adherence to regulatory standards, health system and department policies, procedures, processes, and guidelines applicable to the role. Resolve basic service delivery issues. Lead technologists may coordinate work assignments, workflow, and staffing for an assigned shift/area; serve as clinical or technical resource; provide training. Supervisory responsibilities

Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your specific manager or supervisor. Schedules, including shift rotations and hours of work, may be adjusted to meet staffing needs. Weekend and other after hours coverage may be required based on workload demand and staffing needs.
