The Psychiatrist performs highly advanced psychiatric assessment work and reports directly to the State Hospital Medical Director. Responsibilities include conducting psychiatric activities, monitoring trends, diagnosing and treating State Hospital patients; administering specialized psychiatric treatments and procedures; reviewing system data to ensure recovery plans are individualized; providing consultation or training to direct care staff; attending and leading meetings; participating in or directing clinically related committees; planning, assigning, and guiding the work of others in a multidisciplinary care process; and performing other duties as assigned. May supervise others depending on hospital structure. Other duties include disaster response/COOP participation, and possible alternate shift requirements. Essential Job Functions (EJFs) Attend regular or rotating shifts, including extended hours as needed. Conduct multidisciplinary psychiatric assessments and administer treatments and medications per State Hospital policies. Lead performance improvement activities and participate in Joint Commission/CMS/TAC compliance efforts. Establish physician-patient relationships (in-person or telemedicine) and manage recovery plans, lab reviews, and documentation in the electronic health record. Develop and implement recovery plans that are person-centered and least restrictive, coordinating with other disciplines and HHSC policies. Coordinate with family/guardians/LARs when requested and obtain timely medication consents. Collaborate with neurology for dual diagnoses and coordinate with neurologists as needed. Consult with psychiatrists, medical staff, and psychologists to develop interventions and participate in restraint reduction efforts. Manage acute psychiatric care and emergencies, including authorization for restraints and emergency medication orders. Monitor system data, participate in performance improvement plans, and assist with audits. Maintain communication with Medical Director and other staff to ensure continuity of services; participate in Medical Staff Committees. Participate in mandatory HHSC trainings and adhere to HIPAA, TJC, CMS, and TAC standards. Develop and lead psychiatric services aligned with HHSC policies and regulatory requirements. May manage other staff, provide feedback, conduct performance evaluations, and address corrective actions as needed. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge of general medicine and general psychiatry; development and documentation of person-centered care and recovery plans. Understanding of psychiatric treatment principles and collaboration with staff. Familiarity with state formulary guidelines and documentation of exceptions when limits are exceeded. Experience providing services to in-patient psychiatric patients and using electronic health records and office software. Clinical skills in psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment; capability to direct psychiatric activities and develop procedures. Ability to work with recovery teams, ensure continuous quality improvement, and manage polypharmacy with justification. Ability to plan, assign, and supervise staff; work independently with good judgment and time management. Ability to participate in required trainings (e.g., CPR, restraints) and to present information effectively in writing and orally. Licensure and Certification
Unrestricted Texas medical license required; board certified or board eligible (completed residency in Psychiatry) prior to start date. Screening and Additional Requirements
MD or DO required; at least three years of psychiatry experience preferred; 12 months experience with psychiatric disorders preferred. Applicants may be subject to fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen, registry checks, and other screenings; Selective Service registration may apply for males aged 18-25. Minimum age: 18; Waco Center for Youth requires 21. Flexibility in hours; overtime and extended hours may be required. Immunization policy compliance is required.
