Boston Medical Center (BMC) Position summary: Under the general direction of the Technical Supervisor, provides ancillary support for clinical activities by performing and interpreting moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory tests as defined under CLIA ’88. Responsibilities
After specialized training and required experience, performs moderate and high complexity tests and interprets them. Acts as a resource and interprets tests for laboratory users in a manner consistent with level of training and knowledge. Reviews testing and/or procedures performed by other staff to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies as required when deemed qualified to do so by the section supervisor. Prioritizes STAT and routine samples. Ensures accurate specimen identification and labeling in accordance with standard operating procedures. Ensures appropriateness of sample for testing, obtains approval for testing deviating from SOPs, and informs the patient care unit with documentation in LIS. Ensures testing is performed within defined time periods based on specimen viability; initiates action to resolve mislabeled or inappropriate specimens with documentation. Informs/alerts other laboratory sections about patient identification issues and special specimen requirements. Stores prepared samples according to SOPs (refrigerated, frozen, incubated). Performs aliquotting and processing of specimens within established time limits. Accessions tests according to SOPs as needed. Performs instrument and equipment maintenance as defined by section policies. Recognizes instrument or methodology problems and communicates with leadership; notifies coworkers during shift changes as needed. Performs QC procedures and assesses QC data per section policies. Investigates problems/discrepancies and notifies appropriate personnel; conducts additional testing as needed. Transcribes results into the LIS accurately; notifies for Critical Alert Values as required and documents accordingly. Maintains proficiency for LIS functions and documents reagents/lots/materials. Maintains adequate blood inventories (Blood Bank only). Completes tasks by end of shift and during hand-offs; assists other sections as needed. Participates in Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement activities and competency documentation. Engages in continuing education and attends staff meetings; supports education of students and new staff as needed. Takes part in department committees or task forces as requested; communicates professionally and cooperatively. Reports safety incidents or hazards per Departmental Safety Policy; completes mandatory safety education. Adheres to HIPAA and confidentiality; maintains neat, stocked work areas and proper PPE use. Performs duties with minimal direction after training; plans, prioritizes, and communicates with section leadership. Restocks and assesses inventory; notifies management of supply needs. Adheres to BMC values and infection control/safety procedures; follows dress code and PPE policies. Performs other duties as assigned. Note:

Education : Requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science with supervised clinical internship, or a Bachelor’s degree with an Associate’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Technician and related coursework meeting CAP requirements. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations : Certification by ASCP, NCA, or equivalent (Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist/MLS/tech) is preferred. Experience : Entry level position. Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of clinical laboratory science and CLIA high-complexity testing and accurate reporting. Ability to perform highly complex testing, interpret findings, calibrate instruments, and review results as per CLIA guidelines. Ability to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies (JCAHO, CAP, FDA, AABB). Dexterity to prepare specimens, solutions, screen specimens, and operate computer systems. English verbal and written communication skills sufficient to interact with physicians and staff. Work Context
