Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor's degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education Preference to candidates who have training in or experience working in the Children\'s Defense Freedom School Program model

Preference given to candidates with a bachelor\'s degree in education, family studies, recreation, or a related field.

300-450 hours of verifiable experience working with school-age children

Some supervisory or administrative experience preferred.

Required License or Certification

Special Requirement: Must complete Playground Safety class, First Aid/ CPR training, and Basic School Age Care (BSAC) class within 30 days of employment.

Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position:

The After School Program director coordinates and directs the Freedom School After-School program at Aggie Academy. This 11-month position involves work planning and providing a daily program of developmentally-appropriate, academically-oriented, nurturing and enriching experiences for school-age children. Employee coordinates program activities under the direction of the Director of Laboratory Schools and school principal. Employee is also responsible for supervising all NCA&T S NA student workers.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

Aggie Academy is a NC A&T Laboratory School established under North Carolina General Statute Chapter 116, Article 29A (116-239.5), to improve student performance by providing an enhanced education program for students residing in low performing schools. The mission of Aggie Academy is to provide students an integrated STEAM Education experience to improve student achievement and develop critical and creative thinking skills. Aggie Academy serves students in grades 3-5, with a focus on academic, social-emotional, and physical development. The unit emphasizes:

Liberatory Teaching and Learning Practices

Holistic child development through building Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) skills

Developing Critical and Creative Thinking Skills through integrated STEAM curriculum and Inquiry-Based and Experiential Learning Opportunities

Intentional and Purposeful Family and Community Engagement

Aggie Academy partners with Guilford County Schools and NC A&T. All Aggie Academy employees are employees of the NC A&T College of Education. Cross-campus collaborations and PBTE provide opportunities to strengthen student success and educator preparation. The College of Education prepares educators, leaders, and counselors who promote equality, access, and advocacy.

Work Hours

Monday to Friday from 12pm to 7pm

Remote/Hybrid:

On-site (Employees are primarily in the office and/or require dedicated on-site space).

Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies Required Competency: Program Administration

Duties – Program Development:

Ensure the After-School program provides quality care that expands children\'s experiences, extends learning, and provides warm and caring support. Plan, develop, coordinate and direct program activities in coordination with the school principal and the Director of Laboratory Schools; supervise student workers; ensure access to developmentally-appropriate resources and activities; assist in screening hires and staff development; maintain confidentiality; coordinate special activities and field trips; prepare and maintain program reports and records.

Required Competency: Supervision

Duties – Staff Development & Supervision:

Plan and conduct afterschool staff meetings, orient workers and volunteers, facilitate required training, cover staff absences, and maintain staff-to-child ratios.

Required Competency: Communication - Verbal/Written

Duties – Verbal & Written Communication:

Serve as primary liaison with parents/guardians; communicate program procedures and events; handle inquiries and route to appropriate personnel.

Required Competency: Knowledge - Professional

Duties – Child Development & Certification:

Use positive reinforcement and developmentally-appropriate guidance; adhere to policies and regulations; maintain CPR and First Aid certifications; act as liaison with school-day staff and organizations; participate in professional development; may serve as group leader or substitute; participate in school events and committees; perform other related work as required.
