Job Summary
The Tax Managing Director is responsible for applying industry specific knowledge to advise clients on the tax implications of their business obligations, evaluating and selecting actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations, and serving as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. The Tax Managing Director applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues, communicates potential risks and policy changes, and makes top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. The role is a key member of the office/region leadership team and involves direct supervision as either a final or secondary reviewer under the partner. The Tax Managing Director also participates in marketing, networking and business development within an area of expertise while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions. Tax Compliance
Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens; ensures self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM). Manages engagements to achieve engagement management metrics Practices hands-on client service delivery Responsible for overall client service by encouraging adherence to TQM policies (including engagement letters, documentation, etc.)
Research
Identifies when research is needed; frames issues to be researched; reports analysis clearly and concisely. Identifies complex issues to be researched by the engagement team and provides research methodology for efficient research Technical reviewers of WTAs in an area of expertise, as applicable
ASC 740-10 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
Applies Firm policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48 Applies technical expertise regarding income tax provisions in international tax, valuation allowance credits, business combinations, and stock-based compensation Reviews and applies income tax provision efficiently
Tax Consulting
Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by reducing taxes Integrates tax knowledge with business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions Applies knowledge of multiple tax specialties (e.g., International, SALT, Estate Planning) for issue identification and resolution
Tax Specialization
Develops in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more taxation areas (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, state and local, international, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, R&D) Has expert knowledge of standards and is recognized as an industry expert Advises clients on tax implications and recommends alternative courses of action
Strategy Development
Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client, Firm, or Firm personnel positions (e.g., reducing taxes or expenses)
Other duties as required Supervisory Responsibilities
Ability to supervise associates, senior associates and managers as needed Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments Acts as a Career Advisor to associates, senior associates and managers Schedules and manages workload of associates, senior associates and managers Provides verbal and written performance feedback Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education : Bachelors degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred Masters in Accountancy or Taxation preferred Experience: Ten (10) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience required Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred Prior supervisory experience required License/Certifications: CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Enrolled Agent (or equivalent) required Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred Software: Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite preferred Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred Language: N/A Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Superior verbal and written communication skills Ability to effectively delegate work Strong analytical, research and decision-making skills Capable of working well in a team environment Capable of developing and managing a team of tax professionals Ability to compose written tax advice Capable of maintaining client relationships Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for issues and resolutions Individual salaries that are offered are determined after consideration of factors including qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.
