Overview

The Senior Data Scientist role at REI develops personalization and product recommendation algorithms to enhance customer experience and drive long-term engagement. This role leverages data science techniques to optimize multi-channel business objectives, identifying high-impact opportunities that elevate our brand, deepen member relationships, and support social and environmental commitments. With a strong foundation in machine learning, statistical modeling, and optimization, the Senior Data Scientist designs and implements scalable solutions that tailor product offerings, content, and experiences to individual customer needs, increasing customer lifetime value and contributing to REI’s bottom line. The role requires a creative and strategic problem-solver who understands technical nuances and acts with urgency, with deep experience in solving complex marketing and customer engagement challenges and an understanding of downstream data and process decisions. Models and acts in accordance with REI’s guiding values and mission.

Responsibilities

Defines ambiguous or semi-structured problems related to customer engagement and personalization and determines the most effective data science approach in collaboration with cross-functional teams. Partners closely with product, marketing, and business teams to influence strategy and execution. Builds consensus and advises Sr. Manager/Director levels. Actively mentors and develops junior team members. Applies deep understanding of software systems, data pipelines, and customer behaviours to select optimal methodologies for personalization and recommendation systems. Leads medium to large-scale projects focused on customer-centric solutions, delivering measurable improvements in customer experience and retention. Independently launches and deploys data science solutions that personalize customer journeys and optimize product recommendations with minimal assistance. Drives scientific innovation and system-level changes that support long-term personalization strategies, balancing short-term impact with long-term scalability.

Qualifications

Masters + 4 yrs experience or BS + 8 yrs experience. Understanding of challenges in the business area, applicability of relevant data science disciplines, and system interactions. 5+ years’ experience implementing large-scale end-to-end marketing programs. Ability to keep others current on current scientific advancements. Experience working with raw and prepared data sources in RDBMS systems (Snowflake, Oracle, Teradata, Redshift, etc.) and NoSQL environments such as Hadoop, Spark, Athena. Fluency with statistical and machine learning algorithms such as decision trees, neural networks, collaborative filtering, clustering, survival analysis, graph theory, etc. Knowledge of and experience with cloud computing environments (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud). Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate ideas to senior executives and influence adoption. Collaborative mindset: actively participates with others on the team and across REI to achieve business goals; adaptable to different viewpoints to support direction at REI. Strong business judgment and ability to consolidate information from diverse sources to reach sound decisions; considers impacts on internal and external customers. Effective planning and execution: sets goals, prioritizes, and communicates progress; builds rapport with diverse stakeholders; challenges the status quo and champions change.

Pay Transparency

We are committed to pay equity and transparency. As required by applicable pay transparency laws, REI provides a salary range for roles that may be hired in locations under these requirements. The actual salary is determined by factors including skills, experience, geographic location, and other relevant considerations.

Pay Range

$144,000.00 - $244,800.00 per year
