Gynae-oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist

Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust – we are looking for a registered nurse with an interest in women's health and cancer to join our team as a clinical nurse specialist. Applicants will have at least 2 years post-registration experience in an acute setting. Experience in either women's health or cancer speciality is desirable but not essential as training will be given. A keen interest in the specialty is more important.
The role of the clinical nurse specialist is to provide an expert service for patients in West Dorset diagnosed with gynaecological cancers. The post holder will be based at Dorset County Hospital.
Main duties of the job
Take on the Key Worker's role for gynae-oncology patients, providing specialist education, information and support for patients
Contribute to the development of the gynae-oncology cancer specialist nurse service
Provide information, including the use of Information Prescription System, psychological support using a recognised Holistic Needs screening tool and expert advice to patients and their families/carers, liaising and referring as necessary to appropriate health care professionals in acute sector services or the community
Knowledge of the wider local & national healthcare agenda including participation and compliance with NICE guidance and recommendations including the National Cancer Survivorship agenda for patients with gynaecological cancer
Participation in educational programmes to promote the understanding and philosophy of gynaecological surgery, oncology treatment and palliative care and promote patient self-management
The formation of and participation in the evaluation of standards of care provided to patients
The provision of an individualised patient focused service, maintaining confidentiality and trust

Person Specification Education, Qualifications & Training
Registered Nurse
Post registration qualification in an appropriate area of speciality (gynaecology, gynae-oncology or oncology)
Relevant Leadership Qualification preferably Professional Practice in Health Sciences MSc or Diploma level
Evidence of teaching in the clinical environment
Completion of the 2 day Advanced Communication Skills Training course
Level 2 training in psychological assessment and support

Knowledge & Experience
Experience of working autonomously at an advanced level within the gynaecology and/or gynae-oncology delivering effective patient-centred care
Proven evidence of management/leadership skills and autonomous practice
Evidence of student supervision
Experience of delivering patient advocacy
Experience of audit, research and evidence based care
Experience of clinical governance and risk management
Experience of delivering change management
Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues
Skills & Abilities
Advanced clinical, managerial and leadership skills in speciality
Proven listening/advanced communication skills to level 2 with the ability to manage complex situations, dealing with sensitive and difficult outcomes
Evidence of teaching skills in particular teaching patients in how to manage their conditions and its associated treatment side effects
Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and presentation skills.
Time management and organisational skills
IT skills including Microsoft Word and Excel and Patient Database/Clinical Systems.
Use of own initiative
