Radiation Medicine Therapist - Radiation Oncology

Position: Radiation Medicine Therapist Department: Radiation Oncology Schedule: Full Time, Day Overview: Boston Medical Center (BMC) seeks a Radiation Medicine Therapist to deliver accurate dosages of radiation using up-to-date equipment and document treatment to fulfill physician prescriptions and provide quality patient care. Responsibilities

Prepares and positions patients according to established procedure. Reviews patient treatment chart for prescription, treatment time and prescribed dose; prepares treatment room and equipment accordingly. Explains procedures to patients, reassures regarding treatment reactions, and advises on care of irradiated body areas. Prepares patients for treatment, assisting with transfers to the treatment table as needed. Positions patient, sets up equipment, and operates controls to deliver prescribed radiation therapy. Places blocks and/or wedges as necessary. Monitors patients during treatments and observes for movement via television/intercom systems. Monitors overall patient condition, notes changes such as nausea or sore throat, and consults the physician as needed. Ensures blood counts and port films are satisfactory and recorded weekly. Calculates surface dose, depth, cumulation, and total doses of radiation in the absence of the Radiation Physicist. Assists Physicist in contouring and measurements and in verifying treatment plans. Documents treatment in patient charts, updates diagrams of treatment fields as set-up changes are ordered. Maintains and cleans equipment; keeps treatment area stocked and organized. Inspects equipment safety interlocks and reports malfunctions; monitors equipment performance. Performs related clerical and technical duties such as filing, scheduling, and attending patient care conferences. Keeps abreast of developments in radiation therapy through journals and educational programs. Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct to provide high-quality patient care and customer service. Fosters professional interactions with patients, visitors, physicians, and staff; maintains patient confidentiality. Follows hospital infection control and safety procedures. Performs other duties as needed. Qualifications

Education

Associate’s Degree or equivalent from an accredited institution in Radiation Medicine or related field. Experience

Knowledge of department policies and procedures, familiarity with equipment, and proper setup typically gained through three to six months on-the-job training. Knowledge and Skills

Analytical ability to determine proper equipment setup, treatment length, and detect adverse reactions to treatments. Interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with patients and colleagues. Equal Opportunity Employer
