Dana-Farber Cancer Institute This position is 100% on site in Boston. The staff nurse’s responsibilities include assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for a complex patient population. The infusion nurse provides patient and family education and psychosocial and emotional support. The role is part of a multidisciplinary care team that requires effective communication and collaboration with co-workers and staff at the Institute, BWH, and other collaborating institutions and agencies. The nurse identifies professional goals and learning needs. The role requires clinical expertise, critical thinking, collaborative practice, excellent communication skills and an understanding of clinical research. Responsibilities Delivers expert, evidence-based nursing care to patients and families. Implements nursing process: assesses patient and family needs; analyzes assessment data to develop diagnoses; plans care with measurable outcomes; implements the plan of care; evaluates patient response to interventions. Documents care according to Institute and regulatory requirements. Administers medications (which may include chemotherapy) and performs procedures safely and efficiently in accordance with Institute policy. May administer blood transfusions. Evaluates educational and psychological needs of patient and family and incorporates identified needs into the plan of care. Educates patient and family about disease, treatment modalities (including chemotherapy and radiation therapy). Recognizes and responds to emergency situations appropriately. Maintains BLS certification. Identifies appropriate community resources to promote continuity of care and makes referrals as needed. Complies with professional nursing standards and licensure/registration requirements. Establishes rapport with patients and families from diverse backgrounds. Interacts with patients and families with privacy and confidentiality in mind. Develops problem-solving approaches to meet individual needs; provides age-specific care and support. Fosters an environment sensitive to diverse populations (culture, ethnicity, gender, age). Manages the environment of patient care; monitors environment of care for patient safety and regulatory compliance. Adheres to Institute, Nursing and Unit policies, procedures and standards of conduct; follows Code of Ethics for Nurses. Contributes to unit and Institute goals; participates in committees, QA/QI projects, and research activities; supports professional growth of self and others. Works collaboratively as an effective member of the health care team; delegates as appropriate and supports flow of patients; may function as charge nurse when necessary. Performs pre-procedural assessments, coordination of premedication, IV access and preprocedural labs; supports intraprocedural and post-procedural care as applicable; coordinates research specimen collection when needed; maintains Joint Commission readiness. Provides as needed support for biopsy specimen collection when not acting in a procedural sedation role. Supervisory Responsibility Supervises assistive personnel as appropriate in the provision of patient care. Qualifications Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Baccalaureate degree in nursing required; bachelor’s preferred. Minimum of 1 year (or equivalent) of nursing experience; oncology nursing experience strongly preferred. Certification in Oncology Nursing preferred – OCN, AOCN, CPON. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team; strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Ability to function in a busy setting with patients with complex needs.
