Overview
Assistant General Counsel role at Safe Horizon. The Assistant General Counsel assists the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel in representing the legal interests of Safe Horizon, including contractual, real estate, policy, litigation, regulatory, employment, not-for-profit governance, and tax-related matters. This is a full-time position reporting to the General Counsel, with some dotted-line reporting to the Deputy General Counsel. Responsibilities
Advise General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, senior management and others within the organization on nonprofit corporate, tax, compliance, intellectual property, governance, benefits, litigation, and employment law issues. Draft, review, revise, and negotiate contracts (government funders, vendors, consultants, IP ownership, corporate sponsorships, special events, licensing, real estate and leases) and advise senior management on related issues. Support and engage in Safe Horizon’s antiracism work and the General Counsel’s Office. Assist with organizational compliance with contracts, regulations and applicable law (lobbying, regulatory and public policy matters; charitable solicitations in New York State and nationally). Oversee the management of Safe Horizon’s insurance portfolio and advise on risk management, liability, and insurance matters. Monitor and advise on legislative developments related to nonprofit organizations, including HR and benefits-related legislation. Analyze statutes, regulations and procedures. Supervise responses to subpoenas and requests for confidential organizational information. Assist with supervision of interns, volunteers and fellows. Communicate independently with outside counsel and representatives of outside funding and/or regulatory agencies. Monitor and manage litigation. Develop and deliver trainings and workshops for staff. Represent the corporation in court and administrative hearings. Perform other duties as assigned. Demonstrate leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively with people with varying levels of education. Maintain excellent organizational and managerial skills; ability to meet deadlines; strong planning and prioritization. Qualifications
Required: Admitted to practice law in New York State. Demonstrated interest in nonprofit work or public interest work. Excellent analytical, drafting, negotiation, research and oral and written communication skills. Ability to provide sound legal advice, develop creative solutions, and exercise sound business judgment. Track record of professional judgment and discretion serving multiple teams and senior managers in a diverse organization. Exceptional initiative; ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Ability to handle multiple assignments, meet deadlines and pay strong attention to detail. Flexibility to work as part of a team and independently. Creativity and a sense of humor; commitment to Safe Horizon’s mission and values. Desired: At least two years of experience practicing relevant law. Transactional, Litigation, Intellectual Property or Real Estate experience. Education
