CARDIAC ANESTHESIOLOGIST - ANESTHESIOLOGY & PAIN MANAGEMENT Cardiac Anesthesiologist role at Cook County Health. The Cardiac Anesthesiologist will provide anesthesia care for cardiac surgery and minimally invasive cardiac structural cases performed in the catheterization laboratory or as needed. The Cardiac Anesthesiologist will provide anesthesia care to patients presenting for non-cardiac surgeries and procedures, and will engage in education, resident training, and quality assurance projects as part of the Anesthesiology service. Typical Duties

Provides complete range of anesthesia care to all cardiac patients when needed, including preoperative assessment, intraoperative anesthetic administration and monitoring, and post-anesthetic care in compliance with The Joint Commission standards. Provides anesthetics and all anesthesia-related procedures for Cardiac, thoracic, and minimally invasive cardiac Cath lab cases. Provides Transesophageal Echo imaging and interpretation during cardiac cases. Provides cardiac and general anesthesia related care throughout the Cook County Health (CCH) hospitals in all functional areas including the Operating Room, Obstetrics, PACU, ICU Wards and any other clinical settings as needed while meeting and exceeding compliance standards. Works independently, participates in training residents, and provides medical direction to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). Examines patients, obtains medical history, and uses diagnostic tests to determine risk during surgical and other medical procedures. Coordinates work during medical procedures with nurses, residents, CRNAs, medical technicians and health care providers. Administers anesthetics during medical procedures using local, regional, general, and monitored anesthesia care (MAC) methods. Coordinates the administration of anesthetics with surgeons during procedures. Provides and maintains life support and airway management as needed and helps prepare patients for emergency surgery. Determines when patients have recovered or stabilized enough to be admitted to Intensive Care Unit or discharged home after surgery. Works daily hours, takes in-house on-call coverage (1st call), and may participate in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th calls or other call schedules based on operating needs, including cardiac calls. Performs all other related duties as assigned by the Department Chair. Minimum Qualifications

Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical college or university; licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment. Successfully completed Anesthesiology Residency. Board Certification or Board Eligible in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology; must obtain Board Certification two years after starting employment. Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment. Must hold advanced perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) Certification through the National Board of Echocardiography. Cardiac and Thoracic Anesthesiology clinical experience. Active Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Active Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. Preferred Qualifications

Two (2) years of experience in an academic program. Fellowship in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesiology. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Other Characteristics

Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to ensure the protection of the confidentiality and security of healthcare information for all patients. Strong working knowledge base in anesthesiology and pain management; participates in the development and implementation of program planning, objectives, policies, and standards essential to the delivery of quality anesthetic care. Proficiency in the safe administration of blood and blood products, ensuring that all protocol is followed. Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with the ability to establish rapport with families. Strong decision-making skills and excellent organizational abilities. Ability to work daily hours and take in-house on-call coverage (1st call) as well as 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and cardiac calls based on OR needs. Ability to build relationships within the organization and to represent CCH with appropriate outside agencies. Ability to prepare reports and effectively present information in meetings. Ability to exercise discretion and make wise decisions. Excellent teaching and mentoring skills in clinical anesthesia for Oral Surgery residents, Anesthesia residents, and interns. Ability to handle many simultaneous demands and meet all required deadlines. Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when challenged. Sensitivity and respect in caring for patients and in dealing with patients, family members, trainees, and CCH staff of diverse backgrounds. Physical and Environmental Demands

This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
