Hex
Overview
About the role
Hex is looking for a great first in-house lawyer to help us scale our business, while making sure risk and complexity don’t scale with it. We are open to different levels and experience, assuming candidates have a strong grounding in high-growth tech, exposure to commercial law, and innate curiosity.
In this role, you would focus on all aspects of our business and technology, including contracts with our customers, partnerships with technology platforms, and how we’re approaching data security (our most important job!).
The first and primary focus will be on our commercial foundations. We’re doing a lot of customer deals (yay!) but they’re increasingly complex, especially in the fast-moving world of AI and data. This is costing time and causing friction – and you would be on point to set our strategy on navigating this. You would have an opportunity to build a foundation, helping standardize, streamline, and simplify the way we structure our agreements.
Beyond commercial work, as our first in-house lawyer you’ll have opportunities to engage in other areas of the company – including employment, IP, and corporate matters. There’s a lot to dig into, from international expansion to trademarks to fundraising, and depending on your experience and seniority, we’d love to talk about an overall legal counsel role.
To be successful, you’ll need to be a bit of a nerd, and be knowledgeable and excited about the tech industry, and following along with the latest on cloud, AI, and regulation. You should love learning and explaining new concepts, and be excited to engage as a true business partner, and not see legal as simply risk mitigation or the "no" people.
What we are looking for
JD from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one US state bar
7+ years of legal experience, either In-house experience at a high-growth startup, public tech company and / or top tier law firm with extensive exposure to customer / vendor contract negotiations
Deep working experience negotiating SaaS contracts (on both vendor and customer paper), including subscription and consumption pricing models, order forms, SLAs, DPAs, and vendor assessments as well as professional services agreements, statements-of-work, confidentiality agreements, and third-party partner agreements
Willingness to engage cross-functionally with Hex's products, business practices, operating processes and policies and departments to support all areas of the business
Solid understanding of cloud security and global privacy frameworks
Are willing to write a cover letter explaining why you’re a great fit and what in our Hex Handbook resonates with you or not

Experience with international commercial agreements and cross-border data transfer
CIPP or equivalent certification
Deep familiarity with open-source licensing and emerging legal trends in AI
