Summary
The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking a qualified Medical Assistant II. The candidate will work under the direct supervision of physicians and APP clinical leads, will perform patient care responsibilities and will provide clerical/administrative support in a hospital setting. Job Duties
Schedules patient tests, procedures, and appointments. 15% Conducts patient outreach phone calls and post visit follow-ups. 10% Performs clerical/administrative responsibilities such as filing and/or scanning patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information. 10% Manages in-basket messages and coordinates incoming patient referrals. 5% Enters orders for patient tests and obtains proper paperwork. 7% Takes inventory of clinic supplies and order supplies as needed. 5% Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs. 5% Collects patient history, performs medication reconciliation, notes the primary complaint/reason for patient’s visit, and enters information in the electronic medical record. 5% Administers medication under direction / order of a supervising Physician and/or Advanced Practice Provider. 5% Instructs patients on general care and medical procedures. 5% Maintains patient and service rooms in a neat and orderly condition 5% Delivers staff education, clinical in-services, and/or participates in clinical staff meetings based on the needs of the department and as appropriate to scope of practice for an MA. 5% Supports the clinic / department\'s compliance with regulatory requirements. 5% Serves as a subject matter expert and clinical champion for areas of expertise within your specialty and as appropriate to scope of practice for an MA. 5% Conducts Performance Improvement activities that support the clinic / department\'s goals for quality, patient experience, patient safety and/or efficiency. 5% Sorts and distributes clinic mail and medical records to the appropriate clinic personnel. 2% Performs other duties as assigned. 1% Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution. Two years of relevant experience. Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, or AMCA). Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association. Preferred Qualifications
