Overview
Columbia University is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the Department of Psychiatry. The CFO is the senior financial executive responsible for finance strategy, planning, and operations at the department level. The role leads the budget and finance team, manages procurement and accounts payable, oversees clinical revenue cycle operations, and is accountable for sponsored project administration including pre- and post-award activities, recruitment and retention planning, clinical trials, subcontracts, and contracts. The CFO performs advanced financial analyses and modeling and sets strategic goals to improve financial performance and identify opportunities. The CFO also serves as the primary financial liaison to NYP, NYSPI, and RFMH finance offices, with authority to influence budgeting, accounting practices, and business intelligence across affiliated institutions.
Responsibilities
45% Department Financial Leadership and Strategy Provide the DA and senior leadership with a departmental operating budget covering clinical practice, research and education, and fund balance activity. Maintain and enhance a complete set of financial reports to inform decision-making at various levels. Coordinate and develop the department’s annual operating budgets for CUP with divisional and departmental financial performance goals. Develop consolidated budget materials and support for annual presentation to CUMC administration and central offices. Support the same process for RFMH in coordination with the RFMH Director. Oversee clinical revenue cycle operations with internal and external teams to optimize processes and scalability. Direct the department’s financial planning and accounting practices and its relationships with P&S, CUMC, Columbia University, NYP, RFMH, NYSPI and other affiliates. Manage revenue and expense reporting, forecasting models, and reconciliation procedures for departmental accounts and accounts of affiliated entities. Act as a central liaison for budget and financial operations to CU and NYP finance offices. Advise and educate departmental fiscal officers and senior management on budget and financial issues. 25% Forecasting, Strategic Planning, and Business Development Partner with divisional administrators and program managers to monitor and improve financial performance. Provide visionary leadership in forecasting expenditures, revenues, and resource allocation. Introduce performance benchmarks and routine dashboards to communicate financial performance. Meet regularly with divisional administrators to develop corrective action plans aligned with department goals. Lead business plans for high-impact initiatives and cross-institutional ventures across CUP, RFMH, and NYSPI. Provide project and growth strategy leadership for new initiatives, including financial analyses of programmatic results. Provide insight and creative problem-solving through budget analysis, forecasting, and modeling. Maintain knowledge of finance and administration trends, including technology advances. 15% Organizational Leadership and Talent Development Direct management of the CUP Departmental Finance team and related offices; RFMH finance reports to the RFMH Director to ensure proper controls. Provide performance evaluations, foster accountability, and support succession planning and leadership development within the finance team. Promote professional growth, mentoring, and cross-training to strengthen resilience. 10% Reporting, Compliance, and Risk Management Ensure proper general accounting procedures across CUP and coordinate with the RFMH Director for RFMH compliance. Meet fiduciary responsibilities, lead compliance initiatives, and ensure audit readiness. Collaborate with reporting groups and fiscal officers to ensure consistent, professional, and accurate reporting. Monitor variances to approved budgets; mitigate financial risk and propose alternatives; coordinate with RFMH Director for RFMH-related variances. 5% Other Leadership Duties Serve as a senior advisor to the DA on financial matters and participate in cross-institutional committees, representing Psychiatry in financial and strategic initiatives. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent in education and experience, plus seven years of related experience. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree preferred, with MBA in accounting or finance; ten years of progressively responsible experience in large complex organizations, preferably healthcare or academic medical settings, at a senior level. A Master’s degree or MBA in Accounting, Finance, or related field is strongly preferred, with proven CFO or equivalent senior leadership experience. Strong understanding of healthcare or medical school operations and finances, including fund accounting, physician practices, and grant finances. Prior senior leadership experience at a Medical Center is strongly preferred. High competency in analytical techniques and computing skills. Experience collaborating across institutions on complex projects and budgets exceeding $250M. Experience in developing innovative compensation, incentive, and financial sustainability models. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence at executive levels. Strong analytical, strategic, and leadership abilities with experience in transformational change management. Excellent written and oral communication, organizational, analytical, and computer skills. Self-starter with quantitative analysis abilities and the capacity to work with minimal oversight.
