Position Summary
MassDOT co-ops
have the chance to work with engineers and specialists in the state. Duties include site visits, working on significant projects, and delivering quality work that positively influences transportation in the Commonwealth. The co-op program typically runs from January to May–June. Co-ops must commit to a full-time schedule for the co-op period. Co-ops will be assigned throughout the Highway Division and may assist MassDOT engineers in the following areas: Preparing plans, designs, specifications, and cost estimates for highway and bridge construction or maintenance projects. Providing data for the preparation of engineering or environmental reports and studies. Performing calculations related to survey, traffic forecasting, soil capacity, groundwater flow, and quantity of materials. Analyzing changes in scope of work during design and/or construction of projects. Conducting field investigations to gather information needed to resolve construction, maintenance, environmental, or traffic problems. Reviewing applications for licenses or permits for the transportation of materials and for the construction of projects. Reviewing construction and service contract payment estimates and/or invoices for materials, equipment, and supplies. Inspecting construction operations to ensure work is performed according to specifications (e.g., drainage, steel placement, paving, concrete). Inspecting maintenance work, such as highway landscaping and repaving operations. Performing related duties such as writing memoranda, letters, or general reports; collecting and correlating engineering data; maintaining records; and operating technical equipment. Geocode—pull, redact, and analyze crash data to assist with evaluation of high crash locations and with Road Safety Audits. Environmental compliance and permitting, including groundwater, stormwater, air, noise, wetlands, wildlife, climatology, hazardous materials, and waste. Assists in the biennial inspection of bridges as required, including preparation, field inspection, and compiling the final report. Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with AutoCAD. Proficient with Microsoft Office with strong Excel skills. Excellent verbal and analytical skills. Additionally, a Design Build Co-op is available in District 4 only. This Design-Build Co-op will be assigned to one of several active MassDOT construction projects within District 4 (much of Middlesex and Essex Counties). District 4 Headquarters Office is located in Arlington; however, the co-op candidate will work at one of the following sites: Lowell – Rourke Bridge Replacement – Wood Street Extension over the Merrimack River and MBTA/CSX Railroad (Design-Build) Haverhill/Methuen – Bridge Replacements at I-495 over the Merrimack River and Route 110 and Industrial Avenue over I-495 (Design-Build) Haverhill – Bridge Replacement at Bridge Street (Route 125) over the Merrimack River and the Bradford Rail Trail (Design-Build) Andover/Lawrence – Bridge Bundle - Replacements of Bridges at I-495 over Route 28 northbound and southbound and I-495 over MBTA Railroad (Design-Build) Chelmsford/Lowell – Bridge Bundle – Replacements of Bridges at Westford Street and Gorham Street over I-495 (Design-Build) Duties and Responsibilities
Inspect construction operations to ensure work conforms to contract documents, required approved submittals, and accepted good construction practice. Use survey equipment and other measuring tools to confirm work is constructed to required dimensions, line, and grade. Measure and calculate quantities of completed work. Complete pay slips and sketches for Contract Quantity Estimates. Document Contractors’ labor, equipment, and work performed and complete daily Field Inspection Reports. Sample, test, and obtain all required documents for materials incorporated into construction projects. Monitor compliance with work zone safety and approved traffic management plans. Assist in the review of design and construction submissions related to complex bridge projects. Participate in project meetings including progress meetings, over-the-shoulder design review meetings, and comment resolution meetings. Assist in ensuring consistency with Department policies and procedures related to design-build project execution. Candidates must have a driver’s license and reliable transportation to and from the job site/District Four Headquarters daily. About MassDOT
