Compensation

Mechanical Engineer I - $90,551.00 Mechanical Engineer II - $107,655.00 Mechanical Engineer III - $120,427.00

Responsibilities

Under general direction, the incumbent will serve as a Mechanical Engineer within the Work Car Engineering group of the Division of Car Equipment. This role requires technical insight, strategic thinking, and collaborative problem-solving to ensure the design, performance, and reliability of Work Cars across the transit system. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Reviewing and approving engineering submittals including analyses, specifications, drawings, manuals, test plans and reports, schematics, design modifications, prototypes for electrical and mechanical systems and components. Providing engineering and technical support to work equipment capital projects, including writing and reviewing technical specifications, contract provisions, reviewing bidding proposals, design reviews, and First Article Inspections (FAI). Determining root causes of failures and developing corrective actions. Traveling domestically and internationally to contractor facilities. Reporting to field locations on a 24-hour, 7 day/week basis to perform assigned tasks.

Education and Experience

A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License and four years of full-time experience in mechanical engineering. A master’s degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited college will be accepted as equivalent to one year of full-time experience.

Special Note

To be eligible for placement in Assignment Levels II and III, individuals must have at least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project.

Desired Skills

Knowledge of rail work equipment (Work Cars), hi-rail vehicles and various specialized rolling stock, including systems, sub-systems, and components. Knowledge of diesel engines or hybrid systems. Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Experience in field inspection and testing of rail vehicles. Knowledge of engineering principles applied to railway equipment design. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access). Experience with CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, Solid Edge, SolidWorks). Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
