Overview
Engineer VI, EN-28: $10,071.00 - $12,855.00 per month. The posted salary range indicates potential compensation, not necessarily starting salary. New external hires typically begin at the initial step. Placement above the initial step may be considered based on position requirements, exceptional qualifications, budget availability, and other relevant factors, all requiring prior approval. Current Hawaii State Department of Education employees will be placed according to Department regulations and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
Responsibilities
Supervises the professional and nonprofessional personnel of a major engineering activity;
Develops procedures and standards for carrying out specialty in the organization and represents the organization with authority on technical engineering matters within the area of specialization;
May direct a large engineering section or assist in directing a large engineering division or district office as a technical specialist in planning, development, design and/or research;
May lead the efforts of a team engaged in carrying out difficult or critical project assignments with emphasis in the area of specialization;
Serves as a staff specialist responsible for overall control and coordination of a number of major and complex engineering projects or programs;
Performs other duties as required.
Basic Education/Experience Requirements
A.
Graduation from a school of engineering in an accredited college or university. For some positions, graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in physics, mathematics or chemistry may be accepted as qualifying, provided the applicant has had at least 15 credits in engineering sciences, common to all engineering disciplines, e.g. thermodynamics, statics, electrical science, applied mechanics, engineering drawing, strength of materials, etc.
B.
Administrative, professional or technical experience involving the application and knowledge of the fundamental physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering including physics, chemistry, mathematics through integral calculus and engineering sciences such as statics, dynamics, strength of material, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and engineering drawing and other specialized courses to one of the branches of engineering. Such experience must be substantially equivalent to the knowledge and understanding gained by completion of a college training leading to a Bachelor's degree in engineering; or,
C.
A combination of college training in engineering and experience mentioned in B above substantively equivalent to completion of a college training leading to a Bachelor\'s degree in engineering.
Experience Requirements Except for the substitutions provided for in this specification, applicants must have had progressively responsible experience of the kind and quality described below and in the amounts shown in the following table.
Engineer VI : 4 years of Engineering Experience, 1 year Supervisory or Staff Advisory Experience, 0 years Administrative Experience, total 5 years.
*For the Engineer VI level, at least one year of the required engineering experience must have been experience comparable to the next lower level.
Engineering Experience Progressively responsible professional engineering which required the knowledge and application of the basic physical and mathematical sciences and the engineering sciences to the solution of theoretical or practical engineering problems.
Examples of qualifying professional engineering experience include: development and design of machines, equipment, structures or systems; original research; administration of engineering programs and projects; interpretation of systems operational requirements; evaluation or survey of engineering projects; and activities involving production, construction, regulation and testing where engineering considerations are important.
Note: In some situations, non-professional experience may be accepted in lieu of professional engineering experience if it contributes directly to the candidate\'s engineering competence.
Quality of Experience: For Engineer VI, at least one year must be comparable to the next lower level; the applicant\'s record must show the ability to perform the duties of the position.
Supervisory or Staff Advisory Experience
A. Supervisory Experience:
Professional engineering experience including training subordinates, coordinating workloads, evaluating performance, and maintaining high standards of work.
B. Staff Advisory Experience:
Professional engineering experience as a technical expert performing staff advisory, consultative, and/or reviewing work for long-range planning or development of projects.
Administrative Experience Professional engineering experience including planning (budget planning and justification), organizing, staffing, policy formulation and implementation, and directing a program providing staff services.
Substitutions Allowed
Master\'s Degree in Engineering may substitute for one year of Engineering Experience.
Substitution of Supervisory, Staff Advisory or Administrative Experience for Engineering Experience is allowed on a year-for-year basis.
Substitution of Administrative Experience for Supervisory or Staff Advisory Experience is allowed on a year-for-year basis.
Professional Engineering License Requirement For the Engineer IV and higher levels, applicants must possess a Hawaii State Certificate of Registration as a professional engineer.
Driver\'s License, Lift/Carry, and Other Requirements
Driver\'s License: Applicant must have a current, valid driver\'s license.
Lift/Carry: Applicants must be able to lift/carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds unassisted.
Salary: The advertised salary is based on full-time employment and includes shortage and school year differentials, if applicable.
