Opening in November 2025, the A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Center for the Performing Arts and the Richard and Jane Manoogian Art Gallery (Schaap Center) will be a state-of-the-art performance and exhibition venue dedicated to connecting, creating, and inspiring communities through the arts. With a mission to demonstrate artistic, educational, and operational excellence, the Schaap Center will anchor the Jefferson Avenue cultural corridor, spanning through the Detroit and Grosse Pointe communities, offering year-round programming with both permanent and visiting partners. Our vision is to be a place for everyone – fostering belonging, accessibility, and engagement in the performing and visual arts. As we launch our inaugural year, we are assembling a collaborative team that will set the tone for excellence in operations, guest experience, and community impact. Position Summary
The Facilities Director is a senior leadership role responsible for the overall management of the Schaap Center’s facilities and technology infrastructure. This includes building systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, security, and life safety), custodial and maintenance services, IT systems and networks, and event-related facility support. The Director will ensure that the building and its technology operate safely, efficiently, and reliably to support the Schaap Center’s mission and programming. This position will lead a team of staff and contractors, oversee emergency preparedness and safety procedures, and manage capital improvement projects. The Director will also supervise the Technical Manager, Maintenance Manager, and other facilities staff, and collaborate closely with programming, patron services, and administrative departments. Key Responsibilities
Facilities Management Oversee and provides hands-on day-to-day operation and maintenance of building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, security, and fire/life safety. Manage custodial services and ensure cleanliness, safety, and readiness of all public and back-of-house spaces. Coordinate and supervise outside contractors and vendors for facility-related services. Plan and execute preventive maintenance schedules and long-term capital projects. Ensure compliance with building codes, OSHA standards, and safety regulations. IT and Technology Oversee all IT infrastructure, including servers, networks, telecommunications, ticketing integration, and AV systems. Manage data security, technology support, and systems maintenance for staff and patron-facing platforms. Collaborate with the Technical Manager to support production-related technical systems and ensure seamless integration with facility IT. Operations & Administration Develop, manage, and monitor budgets for facilities, IT, and maintenance. Recruit, train, and supervise facilities and technical staff, including contractors. Lead emergency preparedness planning, drills, and incident response. Implement policies and procedures for building access, event setup/teardown, and equipment use. Provide operational support for performances, exhibitions, and events, ensuring readiness and smooth execution.
