January 12, 2026 (Applications accepted until filled or closed) Position Description The Department of Aviation and Technology at San José State University announces a tenure-track faculty position in Aviation at the rank of Assistant Professor with specialization in Professional Flight or Aircraft Systems. The incumbent will teach courses in private pilot ground, instrument flight, commercial pilot ground, aviation meteorology, aircraft multi-engine, and courses in aircraft systems, flight controls, flight operations, avionics, turbines, powerplant, as well as courses in general aviation areas such as air traffic management and aviation management. The incumbent is also expected to carry out sponsored research and guide student research projects. The Department of Aviation and Technology is the oldest department in the College of Engineering and is the fastest-growing department in the college, with enrollment of over 900 students. It maintains strong industry relationships and an ongoing internship program. Our full-time faculty are active researchers and attract major funding from industry. The Department offers a BS degree program in Aviation with four options: Professional Flight, Airline Operations, Aviation Management, and Maintenance Management. The BS degree in Technology has two concentrations: Computer Network System Management (CNSM) and Manufacturing Systems. The program highlights Industry 4.0, IIoT, and data analytics in Advanced Factory Operation and Modern Manufacturing Ecosystem. The department and university value inclusive excellence and equity in research, teaching, and service. We enroll nearly 40,000 students, with a large share of historically underserved students; approximately 45% of undergraduates are first-generation and 38% are Pell Grant recipients. Required Qualifications A Doctorate in Aviation/Aeronautics or a related field, or a Master’s in Aviation/Aeronautics or related field with significant aviation industry experience and/or demonstrated ability to lead research projects Faculty in the Aviation Program are expected to have subject matter expertise in the classes or labs they teach Demonstrated commitment to teaching and working with a diverse student population, curricular innovation, laboratory development, externally funded research programs, and research publication in peer-reviewed journals and conferences Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population Preferred Qualifications Priority will be given to candidates with one or more of the following: Experience and research expertise in aircraft systems design, flight controls, flight operation, avionics, flight training, and student education research Valid FAA flight certificates and familiarity with FAA regulations Extensive industry and/or academic research and teaching experience relevant to the aviation field Key Responsibilities Develop and teach courses and labs in the Aviation Program with subject matter expertise Develop course materials, teach according to university practices, assess students, enforce academic policies, coordinate teaching assistants, post final grades, and contribute to teaching effectiveness assessment Maintain a student-centric approach and actively run a research lab providing opportunities for students Participate in shared governance and service on department, college, and university committees Organize all classes within the Canvas LMS Demonstrate awareness of and experience with a diverse student population through inclusive materials, teaching strategies, and advisement Other Duties All San José State University employees are mandated reporters under applicable laws and CSU policies.
