Responsibilities
Leadership and Coaching: Manage GMU's philanthropy program, including recruitment, orientation, mentoring and fundraising activities; provide leadership and staff oversight for fundraising professionals; coordinate and facilitate development with colleagues, Deans, volunteers, administration and staff to support strategic university priorities. Strategic planning and collaboration: Develop and implement plans with the VP and Deans; monitor progress toward goals; improve fundraising effectiveness; foster collaboration across academic units and central fundraising services; ensure effective use of tools such as prospect management and CRM systems. Relationship management: Build strong relationships with unit leadership, Deans, and development officers to ensure optimal participation in fundraising efforts; align college/unit goals with university priorities; maintain a culture of collaboration and communication. Team development: Lead and mentor fundraising professionals; train staff in best practices; recruit and retain talent; manage performance metrics across teams. Operational execution: Oversee donor databases and reporting; ensure accurate records, prospect research, and timely activity tracking; coordinate site visits and leadership engagements with university partners. Revenue Responsibility
Build and manage a small portfolio of major gifts; identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors for institutional priorities. Develop long-term relationships with donors and industry partners to secure multi-year and multi-million-dollar gifts where applicable. Collaborate with administration, faculty, and advancement colleagues to expand philanthropic support across academic units; steward existing donors and secure renewed support. Elevate gift strategies across prospects and units; collaborate with alumni relations and volunteers to drive broad-based support. Strategic Planning / Collaboration and Communication
Promote and solicit funding from viable prospects; demonstrate excellent oral and written communication. Articulate fundraising goals in the context of the Advancement mission and departmental priorities; conduct in-depth policy and priority research. Lead cross-unit prospect strategies, coordinate proposals, and drive follow-up activities; implement coordinated plans for shared prospects. Develop events and activities for cultivation, stewardship, and solicitations to advance principal gifts; guide organizational priorities to strengthen the donor pipeline and fundraising capacity; oversee performance metrics and analytics. Stay abreast of industry standards and adapt strategies to maintain competitiveness and impact; coordinate relationships with businesses, industry leaders and other entities to foster partnerships. Advise senior management on opportunities to broaden support. Reporting, Stewardship and Donor Management
Provide stewardship with impact statements and accountability measures; maintain accurate donor records in the donor/prospect database. Develop and submit proposals; participate in regular Development meetings; share best practices and challenges. Coordinate research and proposal development; track cultivation, stewardship and solicitation activity; enter all development activity in the database. Oversee site visits and coordinate with leadership for donor engagements; generate required reports for industry partners; use data analytics to measure progress against department goals. Qualifications
Master's degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Extensive (typically ten or more years) development experience in higher education. Proven leadership and management experience of Advancement and Alumni Relations professionals within a complex organization. Significant managerial experience of fundraisers in large institutions (typically seven years). Experience with fundraising databases and prospecting tools (e.g., Advance, Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce) and a track record of soliciting and closing six- and seven-figure gifts at a college or university level. Strong leadership, networking, planning and execution skills; ability to manage time and workload in a deadline-driven environment. Proficiency in data analytics and CRM usage; high integrity and collaborative approach.
